Hey guys, just after some input on a mafell ksp55 36v circular plunge type saw. Whether you've used one or own one, what's your opinion?

Cheers

I personally haven't used but did read a german review can't remember which one and if I remember correctly, you can cut  something like 100m of 22mm chipboard flooring. I thought was quite impressive, but can not confirm. It comes with 2 batteries where the hilti only come with one. It is a kilo heavier than the normal version and will be extremely well made. I have thee kss400 version which I'm extremely happy with for general purpose work. It can be used with the mafell rails. Also something to be aware of is if you get get the ksp55/36v it will not fit onto the cross cut rails as the base is slightly different the kss400/36v but the saw unit it's self is the same. Personally I only think it's worth buying if you are struggling to get power like on barret, Taylor wimpy them sort of major house builders where they don't supply power and you need to have a generators. Also a lot of them type firms are not allowing you to use a generator unless you have drip tray. Basically they are wanting everybody to go cordless so no cables acting as trip hazards. I know it's a lot of money but by the time you factor buying in a decent new generator cost of fuel to run no cables it possibly for the tight sort of work make sense. That would be something you would have to decide for yourself. The best think to do is contact Nathan at NMA agencies tel 01484400488 he might have a demo machine you could try for a week or so at no cost, but you would have to speak to him on that. As it's a lot of money I think you're better trying first then deciding what you want to do

If I wanted a (36V) battery powered saw I would also consider the Hilti WSC 70-A36.
It has a max. cutting depth of 70 mm. All 3 Mafell saws only have 55 mm of cutting depth.
To my knowledge it's the only battery powered saw with such capacity.
It only weights 5.8 kg. And it can run on rails as well. Battery has 3,9 Ah battery.
Some of the Hilti saws are made by Mafell but not the WSC 70.
The price of the Hilti (GBP789.00 exc.VAT) is the same as the Mafell KSS 400-36. At least in Holland.

I had the corded version a while back and yes it can run on rails but only at 90 as I discovered when doing a bevel cut and ended up cutting into to the rail. But might have sorted that but just check in case also it doesn't have a plunge facility if you want to. I personally don't think hilti is the same as it used to be it's come down a lot in price and I think don't have the same quality it used. I used to have a wsc 265 years ago but when I got the wsc70 it wasn't as good in my opinion. By all means look at them

Yeah, there the sorts of places/ sites I work at. A lot of kier homes to, I have the generator all be it a massive 4 month old 5kva as it's the smallest one that will power the festool of2200 haha but does weigh a ton and use fuel so if I don't need it I will not take it out :) as for the hilti I'm using the scw22v I think it's called the smaller cordless hilti saw. Had it about a year and a half, it's ok not the most accurate cutting circular saw. Im down to one battery and fancy a change hence the mafell and as a friend pointed out to me. Depth of cut doesn't bother me to much as I really only fit kitchens with the odd carpentry private which is never anything big. I think both the hilti and mafell are similarly prices as I've seen the ksp55 36v for £907

I got the bare Hilti 36v saw for £149 about 6 months ago. I think they mispriced it on there website  [big grin] Im just waiting for the 36v 6Ah battery to get mispriced now.

John....

If you are on them type sites then it is properly worth while looking in to. Like I say contact Nathan at NMA agencies they are the distributers for the uk he will come and go on the price. The accuracy will be spot on also something to note is bosch makes the batteries for mafell so if you needed a cordless sds gun in the future you can get a naked bosch sds version and the batteries will fit I would go for the kss version I know it's a bit more money but about 90% of the tasks you use a chop saw for you can do with the kss system. The only thing you properly can't do is like cutting cornice and cutting small pieces, but the likes of skirting and facings, 456mm shelves can all be done I use mine to do facia and barge boards on the roof beats doing by hand and joint are spot on unless have a badly capped boards and is more convenient than a chop saw. The rails are excellent no messing with straight edges go join 2 rails. I don't know if still do but Tool stop had the best deal on 2 rails they where bosch which mafell makes if you are on them type sites kss 400/36 might be worth thinking about as a lot of time will save bringing a chop saw out. If you do decide to go down that route and wondering what rails to get I personally think the best combination of rails is 1/800 1/1100, 1/1600 and the angle fence put your 1600 and 800 together with the joining strip to give 2400 and join the angle fence and 1100 together to give a 1200 cross cut. The cross cut at worst over 1200mm wil be less than 1mm off
Here is a couple of videos using the kss400 corded version to do a set facings and cut some conti board shelving. I just did with the phone so not the best quality but you should get the idea and when doing the shelves normally I wouldnt spin them

Really! Bare it's £350 :p

I know, me and my mate both got one. About a year ago they put up the wrong price for the 22v combi drill (the full kit) for about £150ish. I got 4  [big grin]

No difference in motors spec other than the kss has slightly higher speed on the corded version the cordless version of the ksp and kss are both the same spec the only main difference is the ksp cannot be attached kss rail that's it both work on the F rails no idea why mafell don't give them both the same base. If you do a lot of chipboard flooring here's how I do it with the larger optional kss rail just one mark lift the saw and attached rail cut.

Does the kss come away from the track? And can you get a cordless one? I mainly 90% fit kitchens so 18mm end panels and Worktop.

Yes and yes

Yes they are both the same and only difference is the base. The best thing is to get a machine on demonstration. Where abouts are you based

Don't know it I stay up outside Edinburgh. Not sure who your local mafell dealer would be. The best think is to get in touch with nma agencies and they will be able to sort something out I'm going to be talking the UK distributers of mafell and could ask if they have any demo cordless saws to try for a week or maybe longer

Not a problem I will send the guy a text tomorrow like you say it's a lot of money most if the tools are available on a 7 day free trial no obligation. I have the kss400 and the Erika 70 I don't regret buying any of them even after the costs
