Making a £13,000 Turntable.

Naim Supernait 2, Naim Cd5 xs, 2 Naim Hicap DR's, Michell Orbe SE turntable, SME V arm, Dynovector DV-20x2L cartridge, Dynovector P75 Mk3 phono stage, Airlink 3KVA balanced power supply, Spendor A9 speakers. Chord Epic X speaker cables. All the power and signal cables are Naim.

Fabulous. Reading through that, it pains me to say that in the  mid-2000's I had a beautiful Naim olive system - CDX/XPS, NAC82/Supercap, 2 x NAP135's driving PMC OB1's. I sold it all because I had other priorities (Dad's leg-up to my three kids' first rungs on the property ladder mostly). I can't believe how well the olive kit holds its value to this day.

All the best.

Interesting that he rounds over the top perimeter edge as well, exposing the substrate under the veneer, and then just uses stain over everything, but the result looks great. I would not have expected that.

Me too, was waiting for another step to address the corner, but I guess all those layers of clear coat take care of it.

I've used the same hot iron glue method he used for the sides of the plinth for veneers on many of my speaker builds.  Works really well and is super forgiving for placement of the veneer.  (All you audio type craftsmen here - am I only one that builds my own speakers??)

Glad to hear about the renewed interest in audio on the FOG. I'm hoping that with the completion of this garage project I can make the wood working/motorcycle maintenance go from a 6 months a year job to a 12 months a year job.  [smile]

On my list of upcoming things to do is to update the plinth and operational characteristic's of a Thorens TD 125 and SME arm I purchased new back in the 70's/80's.

Gotta love those big Mac blue meters... [big grin]

Having finished the walls and re-assembling and attaching the bookcases to the walls for rigidity, I finally got our (cheapo) turntable going for the first time in almost 25 years! the kids were astounded at how good Dark Side of the Moon sounded, I think they were expecting scratchy old 78 style stuff!

As a side note it was with no small pleasure that the bookcases are so solidly built and attached that even jumping on the floor didn't affect the record player! Over-engineering wins everytime in my book! :-)

Ya, for such a crude reproduction model of sound, the turntable is pretty impressive. I remember one of the very earliest tonearms I used (think mid 50's) had replaceable "needles" that appeared to be nothing more than very short (3/8" long) brad nails that were attached to the tonearm. How those things transmitted anything is beyond me but they did function albeit not in a very high fidelity manner.

I have a number of "direct-to-disc" records that I purchased in the 80's by Sheffield records. I'm very excited to re-audition these recordings at some time. I purchased the records not because of their "music genre" but because of the "music quality". That was a tough thing because music genre was really my thing back then.

As this is the only thread on FOG with any Hi-Fi involvement, i thought i would post up a recent purchase of mine.
I don't tend to change much in the way of hardware very often, if it aint broke don't fix it is my motto lol.
I have had my CD5 XS for many years powered by a HiCap DR. Those that know about Naim CD players will know that at some point the transport will fail. I decided to sell mine before it got to that stage and while i could still get good money for it.
After demoing Rega decks, Audiolab and Hegel the decision was not a hard one to make. The Hegel Viking is now sitting in my setup and is a massive jump upwards in sound quality over the Naim. I was truly shocked when playing the same cd in both at home in side by side listening tests.
