Makita Cordless Track Saw

True enough. Less only because I already have the Festool bag.

Hartville has the bag and adapter for $55 so I bought the kit. I have two Makita track saws so I be able to see which works best Mafell or Festool.

My part will be here next week. We'll have to compare notes on how to modify the adapter to accept the Makita casing. I wish I'd taken some measurements when I had them apart, but it seems like a shallow groove could be cut around the collar with a table saw.

I wanted to share a trick about the Makita Cordless too. The hose adapter from TS55/HK55 fits the Makita perfectly with a slight modificaiton. Unfortunately I don't have a picture to show, but once you get the adapter and open up the blade cover, it's pretty obvious what needs to be done. You also don't need any special tools, since it's plastic.

[member=73112]slavi.yordanov[/member]  Wondering if you could help. I received the adapter you talk about and need help on the mod:

Here is the Makita elbow:

Here is the Festool :

Looks like the Festool is held by small groove at the end? But if you push it further in looks like there are four notches that if you cut around the circumference may fit in the saws raised ring? This would only leave about 0.056" wall thickness at the added groove.

Any help appreciated.

I cut mine where the 4 notches are on the Festool adapter. Just connect them together. I don't recall cutting in too deep. Never had a problem with that coming off. Wish I have taken a picture.

That sounds like more fun than grinding the ring casting. Thanks!

Don't think this Festool bag on the Makita is a total success (unless I'm missing something):

Ground a ring in the adapter so it would fit the saw. You also need a little flat cut because the cover has an additional raised section.

Update - I thought the bag interference with the saw was causing the difficulty attaching the bag but ends up there are some bumps on the adapter to lock it on that were a bit tight. I filed them down just a bit and the bag now locks on easily. I should have know this because I had to use some channel lock pliers to remove the adapter from the vac port it comes with. To make a more perfect fit I used a Dremel with a sanding disk to reduce the OD of the part of the adapter that gets clamped by the blade cover a bit (no too much or it will be loose).

Right now this is somewhat hard to attach the bag because the bag interferes with the saw. The Mafell bag does not interfere at all, although, it has a tendency to fall off if you bump it. With the Mafell it slips on the saws adapter. The Makita saw adapter has an angle on it and can rotate to get the Mafell bag away from the saw. The Festool adapter is straight and follows the angle of the hole in the saw which makes it difficult to apply the bag.

Adding another photo. To make it even easier to attach I cut some of the rib off the plastic bag insert. I'm liking this mod now! Sorry, one more thing. When trying out the saw it had trouble retracting and it was the bag. I needed to trim that plastic piece up to the top where the rod attaches. This did the trick!

Why not get Makita bag (part # 122562-9) which is designed to fit Makita track saw.

The Makita bag is used on their miter saw too and I have one and is isn't very efficient at all. Mafell catches almost everything.

But it's passive. Must be the tool itself that's inefficient. Everything that gets to the port ends up in a bag regardless of the brand. Unless Makita bag restricts air flow more than Mafell.

Hmmm... thanks for doing all the prototyping, Mike. My nozzle gets here later today, I guess. I'm still gonna try it out.

Sorry - see my post above I found what was causing the bag to be difficult to attach.

One more mod for an Imperial brained worker:

And Mafell/Festool bag comparison. I like the way the Festool bag fits well, with a little work, and has a twist lock with captured dust cap. The Mafell is a slip fit with an o-ring and it you bump it a few times it falls off and I have lost the original dust cap and a replacement. It gets stored on the bag and I think when you shake the bag to empty it it falls in the trash. May have to order another Festool bag and give the Mafell to my son.

Whoa and wow. And thanks again for all the detailed legwork Mike! My adaptor seems to be lost in the snow somewhere. Hopefully soon though.

I’m glad you worked it out. I had a Festool vacuum and one of these ports laying around when I bought my Makita. My intention was to use the vacuum with the Makita. I have never tried the Festool bag.

Success! The bag hack was definitely the spooky part! Thanks for the idea and inspiration, Slavi. And Mike, sheesh! That would've taken me three times the time without your guidance and photos. Much appreciated!
