or just use a cut-off from one of the dividers to use as a "plug".

How about dividers that are full height and rabbets in lid? I'm thinking that the visible joinery on the dividers (where they cut into the box side) would compliment the keys. Also having a section of lid drop into each compartment would provide better separation, in a situation where the box is tilted cards can't slip over the top of the dividers.   

I really like the box, great proportions, subtle detail.

I don't think the cards would move from one compartment to the other, but rabbets in the lid would have been a very nice touch and more craftsman-like, for sure.
