Does anyone know, or can anyone predict what the behavior of MDF in, say, kitchen cabinets, will be in the tropics?  Will it fall apart in the humidity?  How badly will it swell if exposed to water directly?  Will wood-eating insects feast on the stuff?

A piece of mdf that is 3/4 thick will swell to over 1.5 if soaked.  Wood eating insects will enjoy it I believe.

A suggestion for you.  One of our members here - Dan Rush - has been involved with cabinet installs in the Caribbean and has knowledge of the design requirements for such a situation as your brother's.  I would suggest you send him a PM and ask his advice.  Dan is a great guy and always helpful.
