Mearuring inside a cabinet

Cool tape. When I think of the money I'd have if I had no internet to learn of these things. Sigh. :)

The Hultafors Talmeter 6m is my most used "tool". I like that the Talmeter has evolved and that the 6m is compact enough and that it is quite sturdy. I have the 3m version as well in the toolbox and it too gets a lot of use. I think the 3m version is the "nicest one" since it is very small and fits nicely into most pockets. The 2m version is redundant since the 3m version is almost as small.

The 6m version is awesome as it covers a lot of different applications and I seldom find I need a longer tape measure. By 6m I am way into Leica Disto territory already. :)

There is a Talmeter in my toolbox, at home, in the shop and in the car. They are always nice to have around. :)

This may require an extra step, but what about bar gauges.  Here is the Lee Valley version.  If the link doesn't work do a search for bar gauge under woodworking tab.  The new wood magazine I believe has a page on homemade versions.

+1 on the Lee Valley set

It really is a nice quality tool - AND it eliminates one more chance of making a cutting error by misreading the tape, etc

Wow. Thanks everyone for the helpful info. I really like the Hultafors Talmeter 3M but can find a source for it here in Canada. I made need to order from one from Europe.
I looked at the Lee Valley solution but the only problem is I would need to measure the length of the bars. It looks like to Talmeter gives me the distance right away and it's easy to transfer to your work piece.
Off to search some more.
Thanks everyone.

I think you missed my point about using something like the LeeValley setup - you don't have to use a measure at all.  Set the bars to get an exact fit, then place then on your work pieced, make a mark and cut - no measuring involved

Just like using a 'story stick' - no measuring

I think Tom at Tool Home has the talmeter and can hopefully get one to Canada.  I still think the Lee Valley is a great solution, or the story stick pro.  As I mentioned the Lee Valley option may need an extra step in breaking a tape measure, but I think the high level of accuracy would outweigh that.

Would anyone have an idea of a measuring product that could be used to measure the inside with of a cabinet? I tried using a measring tape but it was not accurate enough. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
JC

Woodpecker's Pro Story Sticks are great for duplicating length or measuring to fit inside an enclosed space without being concerned about the actual measurement in inches or mm's. Just set the stops on the Story Stick and mark the piece you're cutting. More expensive, of course, than the Talmeter

It looks like the Bosch Model # GLR825 has a spec of 1mm versus the Leica @ 1.5mm. Is there anything with a better accuracy?

I could help you out with shipping a 3m Talmeter to Canada, I pass a shop that sells them every day. :)

I have had Bosch and Leica and compared them side to side and one was 1.5mm accuracy, one was 1mm accuracy but both showed identical readings on all four different ranges, identical to the third digit. That reassured me.

I know sport a small Leica Disto 110 (dummy proof limited options) and a D310 (great tilt sensor) but I think the Bosch range is great too. Leica used to have flimsy battery doors and both my Leica Lino and previous Disto battery doors failed early on... ...they have reworked them now it seems. With Bosch, never a problem.

I have a leica disto d8 from a few years ago. Cost a bomb and couldn't believe how light and plastic it is, but absolutely brilliant.

Would never use one for cabinetry though, just a simple rule and tape measure always does me fine. But I will definitely be buying that Hultafors talmeter, looks awesome. Never seen it before.

Tom at Tool-home has them. Great tape measure, really well designed.

The Stabila LD-420 is 1mm at 200' and LD-520 is 1mm at 200m (~660').

The previous version, LD-400, is also 1mm at 200'. I have only one of those left...

As of this morning, I have one 6M Talmeter left and several 3M Talmeters. I still have lots of the Meterex folding rules.

Thanks for the offer Henrik. I will see if I can get one from Tom at ToolHome. If not, I will contact you.
Cheers,
JC

The 420 looks real nice.  [smile]
I like the "Tracking" function.

Does it have non volital memory?
