MFK 700 regular vertical base vs conturo base

Hi, I have the MFK 700 router set with the regular vertical base (and 1.5 degree base). What benefits, if any, are there to the base that is sold on the edge banding version (500590).  I got it separately but now don't know if it will be that different than the one that I already have and am thinking about returning it for something more useful for me. I do edge banding but so far only thin stuff with an upcoming project the calls for 2-3mm hardwood.

Thanks,
Heather

Heather,
You can purchase just the edgebanding base and not tie up $ in two MFK routers.  If you round over your edgebanding (1-3mm), the verticle edgebanding base is a necessity IMO so that you don't gouge your edgebanding with the tilt of the horizontal base.  If you only use straight bits to trim edgebanding, the standard MFK works just fine.  For the 0.5mm thick edgebanding, it doesn't make much difference.

Thanks. To clarify, I only have one router and right now 3 bases. I have the 2 that came with the set, vertical and 1.5degree horizontal and the additional one that is advertised with the conturo. I bought it separately but can't figure out how it is is that much different that the regular vertical one.

Hi Heather
You have part number 500590 which is for the 700 series trimmers. The difference is that the base will sit at 90 degrees to the material. It also has the brake on the bearing to prevent marking the edge.

I don't think it is that much different. The way I understand it to be is that the one from the Conturo set is the only one you get with that particular configuration. Meaning "not" including the "regular" vertical base.
I am not sure of that though, as I have the regular set. I did however purchase the 0 degree base because I do quite a bit of solid wood edging. I actually bought the MFK 700 because of the modification that will allow it to cut thicker edging. Paul Marcel's videos are very enlightening.
I would have thought that they would have designed the Systainer to hold the additional base too? Unless I am missing something? It will fit the router with either base installed, which is a plus, but it doesn't hold the 3rd one.

The regular vertical base is flat all the way across and you will not be able to trim edgebanding with it.  The edgebanding base has an offset pad to enable the base to clear the edgebanding for trimming.  As Phil mentioned, it also has a bearing brake which prevents marring the edgebanding by a rotating bearing.

OK, now I think I get it. I cannot use a planing bit in the regular base as well because it does not have an offset pad to allow for the edge banding. And if I use a bearing guided bit to it would't have a brake.    Sound right?

This all seems more useful for PVC than solid wood so it might not be too useful for me.

Thanks,
Heather

Hi
If your main application is ABS/PVC edging then perfect.....if not then the others are best suited to your work for solid edging etc.
