MFK700 Question

I bought the MFK700 set which includes the vertical and a horizontal base.

I am assuming the horizontal base has the 1.5 degree slant, but there isn't any obvious marking on the base to prove it.

How are you supposed to tell the 1.5 degree base from the 0 degree base?

The zero degree base has a sticker on it clearly indicating the angle.

You guys who are using the MFK700, how well is it working for trimming solid wood edge banding / edging flush to the surface of plywood shelves?

Hi Seth and Everyone,

By now I own several MFK700, each of which is set up in a different way. I have never found a trimmer as accurate. I had done my last job using laminate a decade before the MFK700 came to the USA. Si I use mine for solid wood edge banding. Those MFK700 earn their purchase price every year in saved abrasives. So the labor savings on sanding is a pure bonus.

Our large auto bander will apply 3mm thick solid banding and it does a better than average job auto trimming. With thin banding the auto machine is very effective. However, with the 3mm material we set the auto trim slightly proud, and finish the trimming by hand with an MFK700, often with the 1.5° base. When we use thicker solid wood banding, we use the 0° base.

The 700 is great for trimming any type of edge banding. If you a using wood veneer the hand trimmers can be a crap shoot. I've had many times when it tears the veneer, depending on grain direction.

I also use it to flush trim items in the center of a panel;

I looked 3 times at the base that came in the kit. No sticker.

I'll add one.

I ordered the 0 degree base and will but a sticker on it as well.

I also ordered an edge guide. I have the 1010, 1400, and 2200 and they all have edge guides in the kit.

Only the zero degree base is marked with a sticker.
When you receive your new base you will see the sticker.

Whats the max thickness of edge banding that it will trim

Hi Seth and Everyone,

The longest Festool cutter supplied by Festool for the MFK700 horizontal bases is 16mm, but that does not have replaceable blades. That trim cutter bit only has 12mm capacity. Personally I have had much better efficiency using the replaceable blades, so I limit the thickness of solid banding in my practice to 11mm. In all the years I have used solid banding never once has a client insisted that be more than 11mm thick.

If you need to trim edgeing deeper than 18mm, use the 1010 with the horizontal adapter and guide plate. It also works very well.

I used Paul-Marcel's modification. Works like a hot damn. That down spiral bit makes a big difference.

You will find a video on his web site.

Cheers,

Comment, when making frameless cabinet boxes with 1/4" edgebanding and trimming with the angled base I found there was visible gap where the sides butted with top/bottom. That said, with 3mm banding I doubt it would be noticable.

I did buy the 0 degree base but ultimately found, for me at least, the 1010 with the edging plate was a better overall solution, not because it trimmed any better but because it's more versatile. JMO...YMMV

Well worth noting.
