MFT and ZYLISS Vise

Here's how I attach my ZYLISS vise to my MFT.

I used some baltic birch scraps I had and used biscuits at the intersections both vertical and horizontal. The nuts I made from some aluminum stock I had, the length help get it lined up in the slot. Another plus is I can clamp to the edge of the bench easily.

I took a more simplistic approach. I found it convenient to clamp the vice directly onto the aluminium profiles on the side of the MFT - all I needed was a block of wood the right depth to make the aluminium thicker

I love this thread.  I have a Zyliss Vise that I bought at a woodworking show back around 1990.  Haven't really used it that much, but it might be time to take it out of storage! 

For those who have never seen them, they are really versatile and portable. 

I bet that they would fit well into a SYS3.  [big grin]

I love this thread.  I have a Zyliss Vise that I bought at a woodworking show back around 1990.  Haven't really used it that much, but it might be time to take it out of storage! 

For those who have never seen them, they are really versatile and portable.

I've had my Zyliss vise (as well as the garlic press) since the 80s, and like you, I haven't used it in a while.  I tend to think it would fit a Sys2.  Guess I need a trip to the shop to check it out.

I considered doing something similar for my Zyliss and the MFT/3.

However, I found a Zyliss clone that has clamps with a larger throat and they fit the rails of the MFT/3 without having to add an extension.

Yes my vise has the shorter clamps you can see in the photos it does not come close to reaching. I only made the bracket on Monday in response to an off thread comment I another post, and I can't believe how solid it is. I have already made another so I can have opposing clamps. I bought my first one in the 80's and use them all the time. I work on boats so nothing is standard. I think I have room to drill a couple of 20mm holes in them, QWAS was talking about holes off the table for his rail dogs, and it sounds like a good idea.

The clones that I know about are z-vise, vunder vise and grip master. They sell new for a lot of money, but can be had on bay and craigslist for as low as 40 dollars. I think the z-vise is the only one available new. They are all the same and all the parts are the same. My vunder vise came with another full jaw that can hook on the remote table.

Yes they will fit into a sys 2 but you have to remove the handle. The one I Carry in the car was modified by it's previous owner and the end of the shaft was drilled and tapped and a small knob gets screwed on. It makes it faster to move the screw when you need to, an added plus.

I don't know the name of the clone... there are no markings.  But it was a gloat... the store found it in their warehouse and had the complete system sitting on a shelf marked for $25 just to get rid of it.  I was happy to oblige.  The items are interchangeable with my Zyliss brand vise.

I too have one of the Zyliss vises sitting on the shelf. My dad gave it too me back in the 80's. Might be a nice accessorie for the MFT/3.

Like it! Never seen it before!  thought nothing of it but the more I watched in the video to more impressed I was with the system.  Wonder if they sell it in the UK so I could have a close up look for my self.

I like a lot of the features or the  Swissrex vise but it sure is not as pleasing to look at as the Zyliss vise. I am going to keep my open for one.

This whole project has also inspired me to build a drawer to store the vise and other things in. I just glued it up this morning. I'll photograph it later on this afternoon and post it this evening.

My father and father-in-law both bought Zyliss vises at the same woodworking show in the mid-980's. For a time, I used to exhibit at woodworking shows, and became acquainted with Jose, the Zyliss vise pitchman back then. I told him that both my father and father-in-law had purchased a Zyliss vise, but neither had ever used it.

He said "My job is to sell em, not get people to use 'em!"

I suspect that there are LOTS of Zyliss vises in unopened boxes - Jose was a VERY good salesman!

Good video.  The SwissRex vice looks pretty versitile.  At 3:30, it was looking like a patternmaker's vise.
