Here’s a YouTube of a template that was made for me to make repeatable hole systems on various tables in a work shop.

To my eyes that method of using the guide bushings and having a sheet that you can always use as a template.
Good method well done but I can't see  a company like Fastcap making them cos who buys two of these?

I like it, nice one.
 
Demographic, I’m hopefully going to develop the reason small cabinet shops are going to want this template for their assembly tables in the next couple months. We’ll see.

However, I have a question for the community. The best 20mm router bit I could find was a Frued 1/4” shank.  It proved to develop weeble wabble with the shank only being able to be mounted to the collet in a shallow position to allow for a 1.5” bore.  Has anybody heard of a 1/2” shank 20mm bit that can reliably plunge to the needed 1.5” depth?  I’m guessing I’ll have to have a bit custom made. Does anybody have suggestions on where to get that done?  I know the bit manufacturers do custom bits. I’m looking to see if anybody has any experience with this. Which companies were good or bad. Thanks.
 
Amana makes a 1/2" shank 25/32" dia plunge bit

This is actually a little over 20mm dia. You could contact them to see if it's available in 20mm or check with sharpening companies to see whether the bit could be ground down to 20mm (with some slight loss in life maybe).  It may take a little trial to find the modified bit OD that's going to give you the required finished size.
 
25/32" is actually 19.8438 mm so that would not work. Have a look at the Festool 20 mm router drill bit. It's an 8 mm shank but adaptors are cheap.

 
I looked at that Festool bit before. I thought it was too small, but it should be able to mount at least an inch into the shank. That should be fine for 8mm. Going to give that a try.
 
Mgildersleeve, are you in US? There is plenty of 20 mm hinge boring bits with 10 mm shank on the market. Just get a 10mm to 1/2" collet adapter. I have a Bosch bit, it makes perfect 20.0 mm holes.
 
In my world you have to answer the question whether this bench top is being used for clamping purposes or for precision alignment purposes.

If it’s only for clamping purposes then any 20mm bit will do. If it’s used for precision alignment purposes, then it’s the combination of the measured diameter hole that the 20mm cutter produces along with the OD of the particular dogs you’re using that will ultimately decide the accuracy of the aligned items.

Also, remember that all things will exibit wear when used on an ongoing basis so that at some time you need to check the alignment/squareness of the MFT top if your main concern is accuracy. That’s the reason tools are recalibrated on a yearly basis.

Router bit, 2" long. I doubdt it would bore 1" 1/2 deep :(

Working on a few cabinets atm, but will use it right after I'm done to make a custom MFT table.

Disclaimer: This is a 10mm shaft, make sure you have the colet or reducer :)
 
I got and tried out the Festool 20mm boring bit. I’m not sure how to perfectly measure the bore, but it seems great. A tall parf dog seems to have the same play in my MFT3 as the new holes I bored. The weeble wobble from the Frued 20mm was pretty drastic. The Festool bit also leaves very little burn marks.

The first photo shows the difference from the Festool and Frued bits.  Those would be the second and third bores. The second is a tall parf  dog tilted in a MFT3. The third is a tall dog tilted in a sample cut.

I've drilled probably close to a 500 holes with my 1400 and the Festool 20mm bit.  I have a 64" x 102" cutting/assembly table and have built half a dozen other portable tops and all the holes were snug for the dogs and other accessories.

That’s very good to know. That’s a nice sized assembly table. I was hoping to get a 1/2” shank bit, but the Festool sounds and feels right. It didn’t take long for the 1/4” shank Freud to start making that sound nobody likes to hear. Can you share any assembly jigs you have for your table?  I am going to start on an assembly table this weekend and an assembly system for it. It’s hard to find information about these systems. Everybody on YouTube likes to show their new assembly tables, but not their systems or actually using them on carcasses, face frames, mitered glue ups, etc..  That’s the next phase of this shop rebuild.

[member=25351]rst[/member]  Curious...Is that the 20mm hinge boring bit, 491072, that Festool recommends using with their routers?
