MFT, yes or no?

After buying a TS55 with CMS-module, a CMS table, a OF1010 with CMS-module, a Domino and a CT MINI I thought I was finished. But the contagious postings in this forum have changed my mind.
As a hobby woodworker I am in the process of setting up a small workshop at home, 2 x 5 m room size. I had planned a L-shaped workbench, 70 cm deep and along the width of the room in the back and 4 m along the other wall. Then I would have plenty of bench-surface to work and place some machines like a small grinder, a drillpress, a vice and a small lathe.
With all the nice stories about the MFT I am rethinking my lay-out. I will reduce the long part of the bench to 2 m, create some overhead storage-space and buy a MFT. Then I have more floorspace, a flexible lay-out (the bench will have the same height as the MFT) and I will enjoy all the blessings of the MFT.
Is there somebody with a better advise?

Hi Wim,

Remember that the MFT guide rail swings up, pivoting at the back, when not in use.  Could interfere with the overhead storage.

Hello Ned, according to the catalogue, the heigth with the rail up will be around 1,8 m. The overhead storage will be real overhead, that is at least 2 m. Only above the bench there will be some shelves that are lower.

What would concern me about adding an MFT to your Festool shop system that is based on the CMS module is the mounting and dismounting the saw from the CMS module when you desire to change from a rip cut to a cross cut.

I would think an efficient setup might be to have two saws, one with a rip type blade for using in the CMS and another with a fine tooth blade for use on the MFT or with rails for sheet good break down.

This might make your Festool dealer happier than your banker.

Guys,

Could you please post pictures of your CMS with TS saw, router, belt sander, and jig saw? We can’t even see these modules here, in the US.  :'( Pictures on Festool Germany don’t show all details, They are so tiny.  :-[
Do you use regular “out of box” TS 55 saw or is it special modification?

MTF is a great supplement for cross cutting, routing and sanding.

Thanks

Please consider the height of the workbench, I think it's wiser to match this to the CMS (90cm/35.4") rather than the MFT (82cm - >3" lower than CMS) to reduce fatigue. It'll be a compact shop, but with good solutions I'm sure it will be fine  :)

I think the pic's of the modules was ok on this site -http://www.festool.se/mediandoweb/index.cfm?ID_O_TREE_GROUP=1662&sLanguage=SE
Here's a little translation for the above :  Bänksag=circular saw, Sticksag=jigsaw, Fräs..=Router, Bandslip=Beltsander, Snittbredd=cut width, kapning=crosscut, längsnitt=ripcut, höjd/längd/matt= height/length/measurements

Special characters removed, but Swedish is easy isn't it?  ;D

Some of the images regarding the cms -

..and ofcourse - loads of accessories for the base module

Hope this helps  ;)

I keep the height of the bench at 82 cm because I will do some jobs sitting at the bench. I am also in electronics, like building tube (valve) amplifiers.

Then 76-85cm is right on the money!
+ a good footrest.
Hope you post some pictures of your setup, I'm into electronics also, and always appreciates a tip or solution to make things more effective, clean and comfy  :)

I am short on floor space, wall space, ceiling space and just plain short.  i have tool pannel behind my MFT.  The only way i can reach most f anything I might need is to climb up on my MFT so i can reach.  I do have the MFT placed so the guide bar swings up just past the tool pannel.  you will really need to keep that swinging bar in mind for any setup.  i see that some here, who have far more floor space, have their MFT out in the middle of their floors.  My interrest in the CMS give me the idea that with that, i could unload my TS , and maybe even my larger BS and setup the MFT and CMS in the middle f the shop.  I could even the CMS in between uses.
