After following advice on this forum I have become a fan of MGH chisels. I was getting them from Fine Tools in Germany.  Good people with good service. However recently the shipping charges to the U.S. have gone off the chart. Does anyone know somewhere here I can get them?

Chris, - Messerschmidt makes good chisels, no doubt. But I wonder what leads you to be focused on this specific brand of Chisel with so many other good brands of chisels available in the US from all over?

Hans

Hans; I prefer to use Butt chisels for the most part. I have found that the MHG handles fit my hand the best and hold an edge pretty well. I have tried other brands 'but prefer the MHG.

The butt chisels are great for chopping tasks when you use them in a sitting position. Regular chisels are simply too long for that purpose. As far as I know, only British-trained Ian Kirby has the habit of chopping his dovetails sitting (may be David Charlesworth, too?). I'm in his camp, and if I started again, I would get something like these for dovetail or mortise chopping:https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/chisels/butt/70931-veritas-pm-v11-butt-chisels  [drooling] [drooling]).

I did get one of the LV butt chisels, and rehandle it, which is now my go-to chopping chisel (sharpened at 40*), used mostly when I sit down:https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/chisels/butt/30029-lee-valley-butt-chisels

This way, for my age, I can work hours at a time without bending or tiring myself.

thank you fellows - for expanding my knowledge in an area of woodworking I aspire to learn more about.
Insights like you're sharing above are not easily found when needed. I am always keen on a sustainable posture while working at anything.
