Modifying Domiplate for Domino XL

As it appears that Seneca is not going to make a Domiplate version for the DF700, I decided to see whether it would be easy to make a modification to my regular Domiplate.  (I do have the Domishims but wanted to have another option.)  The issue with using the DF500 Domiplate with the XL is that the fence offset is 15mm for the DF700 vs 10mm for the DF500.

I found the following aluminum plate that appears to be almost a perfect fit for use as a shim.  It is 4" x 3", about the same dimensions as the Domiplate's bearing surface to the work piece, and more importantly, it is about 4.8mm thick:

My preference would be not to glue the shim to the Domiplate, but rather tap some holes to make it removable.  I've never tapped anything before...what's the easiest way to drill taps by hand?  What bits or kits would you recommend (I wouldn't mind buying a small set for projects down the road.)

Thanks,
Brian

You shouldn't need to tap threads into it, you just need to drill holes in the appropriate locations.  Mark your spots and use a punch to put a dimple into the plate so your bit won't walk.  Use a sharp bit and keep the speeds low, add a little oil for lubrication.  Don't be tempted to turn up the speed, you'll only overheat and dull your bit.  You'll see nice curls forming out of the hole as you still.  When you're through, get a larger bit and run it into the back of the hole to ream the chips from the outside edge of the hole.  Aluminum is very soft, so you shouldn't have much trouble if you're using a sharp drill bit.  Make sure you clamp your material well. If you have a drill press, it will be a little easier.  If not, keep a firm hold on your drill or use the clutch in case the bit snags.

Finished up this modification, and the tapping was pretty easy using a $4 tap from eBay.  The Domiplate now works perfectly with my XL, centering the bit on either 3/4" or 1/2" material (depending on which side the shim is installed).  The only other thing I had to do is make a hole/semicircle in the "viewfinder" area so I can see a pencil line on the work piece.
