My coronavirus at home project

Nice!

Are you using 1/2” or 3/4” ply for the drawer base?

I want to replace my Systainer drawers with something similar so they extend further out of the cabinet.

Well looky here...this thing just manifested into a dust collection system for a Delta 14" band saw.

Here's 1 of 3 paper patterns that were used in this project next to the semi-completed dust collector.

[attachimg=1]

The RH side of the dust collector with a 4" MagPort installed. The large thumbscrews close to the saw casting secure the collector to the saw frame.

[attachimg=2]

The LH side which also shows 2 small thumbscrews that secure the removable access panel to the dust collector.

A close up look of the 2 large thumbscrews that secure the collector to the saw and one of the smaller thumbscrews that secure the access panel.

An inside view of the collector showing the aluminum billet mounting brackets and the Riv-Nuts that secure the access panel.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member], that is really fantastic work. I have a similar Delta and the dust collection is non-existent.  Looking forward to hearing what it’s like with your mods.

Your bandsaw looks pretty tricked out—those knobs on the trunnions and the guides are definitely not what’s on my saw!  Nicely done.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] Do you happen to make/document templates for this dust collection sheet metal?

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] nice work. But what's with all those rivets? Shouldn't you have welded that together? [wink]

Thanks...Max  [smile]  those knobs are from Iturra Design in Florida. They replace the stock cast aluminum knobs with the hard/sharp corners that hurt when you used them. A very pleasant change for sure.

The guides are from Carter Products and they were the best addition to the band saw I've made. I'd never go back to the original setup. The guides were put on about 8-10 years ago and I've not had a single issue with them.

Yes [member=45856]blaszcsj[/member] however my printer will only print 8 1/2" x 11" paper so for the 2 end pieces, I had to cut & paste 2 sheets of paper into one.  [smile]  The files are .cad

Sorry it's been awhile, the drawers are made all out of 3/4

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] Would you mind sharing them? I would love to build a similar dust collection unit for my delta.

Hey Ron [member=3192]rvieceli[/member] I sure wish I could have as it would have trimmed a good 6 hours off of the project. I have gas & stick only... [sad]  no MIG and certainly no TIG.  [crying]

There was certainly an over abundance of assemble-mark-disassemble-punch-reassemble-mark...events, the TIG would have been perfect, just align and tack. [smile]

If you guys promise not to laugh, I share my dust collection solution. [member=44099]Cheese[/member] yours is much more elegant. And thanks for the info on the Iturra knobs. I'll definitely be grabbing some of those. One other upgrade I recently made was getting a new tensioning crank from Highland Woodworking. It's their Part 185193. It has acme threads and is just a dream to use.

Cheers,
Barney

[member=61023]BarneyD[/member]  yours looks a lot better than mine though the form of mine is more like Cheese’s, except mine is made of foam core and hot glue. [tongue] Amazingly it’s been held up for at least 20 years. Cheese’s will last at least a century.

That's good information... [smile] it appears to be very similar to the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP190 that I used to assemble a stainless hand rail/railing for the loft master.

Same from you too. Never looked into 3M for that even tho they make everything.

Had a little time this weekend so I made some pulls and got some stuff organized and put away.... sure fills up fast lol

So a couple of months ago I decided to fab a dust collector for my Delta bandsaw. Recently the bandsaw has been used for just smaller projects, cutting aluminum and plastic. Yesterday I needed to rip some 4 1/2" wide mahogany and I was curious to see the results.

This was a piece of mahogany 4 1/2" wide, 4 foot long and I wanted it to be 1 1/16" thick. I prepared the saw and made one continuous rip, opened up the two pieces and this was the result. I was stunned...anyone that's done much ripping of medium wide boards has experienced tons of sawdust on the table and once the boards are pulled apart the kerf is filled to overflowing with sawdust.

I'd estimate that's less than a tablespoon of sawdust on the table and there's less than a teaspoon full on the two boards on the LH side.

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

I then noticed a light dusting on the outside of the dust collector and was curious how much was left inside the bandsaw door and on the lower wheel where it always collects. Again I was shocked, absolutely clean. The dust that's on the lower wheel is not mahogany, it's caked on the wheel from previous sawing escapades before i fabricated the dust collector attachment.
