My little accident

I have a new DTS400 that hasn't been used yet and I knocked it off my MFT/3 and cracked the outer shell/cover  [jawdrop] I've read the recent post about the guy who kind of did the same thing with his TS (I feel bad for him and know that is more serious than my sander accident.) I hope that I only have cosmetic damage and didn't do anything to the balance of the sander. Because I have not used it, I wouldn't be able to tell of any mechanical or balance issues. Has anyone dropped their sander on concrete with no ill effects? I will try to order a new top plastic cover for it. Is the best way to call Festool service?

Thanks,

Daniel

Oh man.... I actually winced when I read that. BRAND NEW.

I might have cried.

Just a tip - I went to a local discount store and bought a bunch of yoga mats really cheap and put them all around my bench 2 thick. They make a difference with my back and have saved a couple tools from damage.

I know that feel bro.

Give Festool a buzz.  Number and repair order form are below
Repair Form & Festool Service #

I say take the extra time to call and chat with the boys before just grabbing the plastics from the Ekat (online service parts catalog).  You can buy direct from that catalog and Festool will ship the parts right to you.  BUT, it makes the most sense to hang out til Monday and talk to a tech just to get their insight into what else you might need or if it's worth sending the sander in.  Might make the most sense to send'er in, especially if still under warranty.

Well, you can try to call DeWalt's service but I'm not sure how much that will help. [tongue] All jokig aside, call Festool, they get you sorted out quickly.

I dropped my sanders numerous times, including the Rotex 150 from 3 meters high, without any ill effects ever.

But there's always the possibility it drops in the wrong way. When my nephew tried on his brand new Ro 125 for the first time, he put it on the workbench and then plugged it in. As it was, the switch was already in the on position by accident, and the sander took off, hitting the cord on the floor and partially severing it. You never know.

Back when I was in construction we renovated part of a high school including the weight room. I was able to keep the 3,500 sq ft of top of the line floor tiles used in the weight room as part of the demo package. I was able to sell a few here and there but I sold most of them to a friend a few years ago to put in his MMA fighting school's weight room. He ended up closing the gym and never paid for the tiles so I was going to drive the 6 hours to go pick them up and use them for my basement shop and sell the rest. I called him to tell him I was on my way and he said that he had given them ALL away to a school because he did not have a place to store them. Think how mad I was, those things are over $30 new for a 18"x18" tile and he did not pay me 1 cent or save any of the tiles for me. I don't think we have talked since. So, out of all those tiles I only have 3 and the sander missed all of them on its fall  [mad]

As good as i try to pamper them i had most my sanders fall several times on concrete with no damage to the sanders, but it's funny this comes up today.
As i just noticed the hard blue pad of my ETS 150 was cracked after the sander fell yesterday, it was bumping when sanding so i inspected it and saw the damage.
I was happy it wasn't the sander axle!

Been there and done that.  Dropped my DTS and still have a small ding.  Sander works great and I have never bothered fixing the cover.  I would call Festool to be sure, but these tools are pretty tough.

I'm not too worried about it and didn't loose any sleep over it, but it kind of sucks that its still brand new [sad] I will probably buy the part to fix it if its not too expensive. I am mainly worried about the balance, and like I said, I have never used it so it will be hard for me to tell if it is off a little.

Yeah...you might want to get it checked.  One thing for sure with this sander is that it does take the 10 hours or use or so to break in...mine was jumpy at first and now it is exceptionally smooth.  Since it is new, you might think it is not balanced because it is breaking in verses a problem from dropping it.  You might try to run it for 10 hours in a vice or something first and then try to see how it works and if it is smooth and leaves a good finish.

This post made me remember an accident I had years ago with the same sander. I restore tons of old staircases, and use the dts a lot. I dropped the sander from like 15 steps up, it broke in the same spot.  I called beaver tools, they had festool call me and they covered it, they called it a faulty case.  I was straight up honest with them.  They gave me a brand new sander.  The old one worked perfectly still.  There's nothing like festool service.  Sam

Festool rep here told me the new warranty covers everything , accidental damage, servicing when ever it's needed the lot,
Don't know if that's just in uk though, doubt it

The part is only $5.30 plus shipping. I'm sure that it will be fine, but like I said, I haven't used it yet so even if the balance is off a little I would never know  [tongue]
