My MFT Bench Dogs

Thank you for the post.  The low cost, easy to do, high use of these dogs is going to help a lot.  A good thing for this weekend woodworking warrior.  My jig quality is going to improve.

How do you determine how much to chamfered?

Hi Gary, the many variations of bench dogs are HUGE for me when using the MFT. Being able customize the bench dog profiles makes many operations go very smoothly.

As for chamfering the benchdog stems, I used SketchUp to help me see what the dimensions of the stem would need to be to fit snugly in a 20mm hole. Here is a SketchUp screenshot sizing the benchdog stem.

Late to this thread, but excellent ideas.  I have a separate 'SysPort' bench where I drilled a number of 20mm holes using the MFT spacing; it is at the same height as my MFT (a 1080 on stilts to match the height of an MFT/3).  That said, everything I do on either the MFT or the bench can take advantage of these jig ideas.

So you said you had more photos to take...  [big grin]

I do these on a little benchtop lathe that I use for turning pens and what-not, but you can do even do them on a belt sander if you can sand something into being mostly round. Start with a 1" dowel and cut a piece about 4" long. Taper it so that it's fat on one end skinny on the other, with the middle somewhere around 20 mm. You are aiming for a long stretch of the dowel in that 19-21 mm range. Fit it into a hole and see that you have a good inch hanging out underneath the table. You need that extra length because these fit so tightly that you inveriably have to tap them out. When you are satisfied with the fit, measure up 3/4" and trim off the remainder.

The added benefit of doing them on the lathe is you have exact center. You can drill a hole for an insert and know it's dead nuts in the middle.

Just stumbled upon this post with a bunch of great "dog" ideas. I'll  be making some of these tomorrow.

Does anyone have the sketchup showing the dimensions? I wanted to see how much you need to chamfer each edge to get the right dimension. Thanks.
