Need a New Dishwasher

We have the Fisher Paykel drawers. I know their reliability gets a bad rap, and some of that is deserved, but we just love the drawer system as you essentially have two half capacity dishwashers, so you get to run them more frequently, which means that items of which you only have 1 of (like pizza cutters or serving utensils), get to be washed in the dishwasher instead of being pulled out of a half-filled dishwasher to wash by hand because you need them.

If I were to remodel my kitchen, and I'm seriously considering this, I'd get two separate dish-drawers and put them up high on either side of the sink. That way you don't have to bend down (OK, I'm old). And you could even try having one "clean" drawer and one "dirty" drawer and then not putting all the dishes away - just pull from the clean drawer to eat on, then put in the dirty. And when the dirty is full (and clean empty or almost empty), you run the dirty and it becomes the clean one, so you just have a few things in the old clean one to put away.

The people I know who have the FP love the 2 drawer system but have had repair issues.
You could look around but really just decide which model Bosch you want and buy it.
We had an Electrolux, i.e. whirlpool, really nice machine but didn't last.

Have owned a Bosch for about 10 years.
Zero issues, loads well, plenty quiet and gets things clean.
Would buy again.

Miele hands down the best. Samsung (top end) is good value for money. Both clock in at 38 decibels. If you stand close to it you can't make out that is running.
Miele detergent tabs (expensive) really does an outstanding job. Glasses come out sparkling clean and looking like new. Good luck.

just got one of the high end samsungs so far so good. it is suuuuper quiet. I cant even hear it. I thought about having 2 dishwashers but the kids are getting older and around less so just stuck with 1.

Hopefully you don't need to have any in-warranty repairs done on a Samsung dishwasher ::)

Absolute worst.

We are looking also. Our current is a Maytag from 1998 and If I could still get replacement baskets for it we would probably keep using it as it has never given us a lick of trouble. It may be old but it seems more sturdily built than any we have looked at over the past 4 months. Only repair I ever made was to replace the door gasket about 9 years ago. After this long I feel we are on borrowed time so looking but not any urgency.

I open any of todays and the door just feels so flimsy like it's missing some internal parts to keep it all together. The racks are not as well thought out and the third top rack seems a waste to us.

The Wife and I are 180 degrees out on stuff like this. Me I would rather replace before it fails altogether and you're forced to take what you can get. She would run it until the wheels fell off. Took me 2 years to convince her we needed to look for a new fridge after 23 years.

Once I got the Sense energy monitor installed and it had time to ID all the equipment and appliances in the house I could show her that old fridge was costing us $246/year. We've had the new one for about 6 months now, and Sense estimates our electric for the year will be about $75. It will take a long time to pay back a $2k fridge, and to tell you the truth I doubt this one will last as long as the old one which was also a Maytag built in 1998.

The Bosch 800 series are great.  I’ve been specing dishwashers for years in various new builds, rehabs and rentals.  Bosch is by far the least problematic.  I’ve had issues with the drawer type regardless of manufacturer.  Stay away from anything in the Whirlpool family including Electrolux.  Samsung is making really reliable machines too, these days.  Miele is a great company, like the Festool of appliances.  But they are a bit problematic to get repaired if you do have an issue.

We have a thermador (made by the same company as Bosch) - it’s great. We had a Bosch at our old place, the most economical one they sell, and it was also very good. Miele also is great, but has had lots of stock issues lately, so can be hard to find if you need something quick.

One thing to consider is the internal configuration of the racks between Bosch vs Miele. Bosch is a little roomier, which is why I chose it for the previous house.

We have a Bosch 800 series. Quite happy with it.
Had a bad experience with Kitchen Aid and Whirlpool corp in general.

Our F&P drawers are over 20 years old and have never even looked at giving trouble.

My 8 year old Bosch dishwasher is so quiet they have a red light that aims at the floor and glows to warn you that it is operating.

My one regret is that I did not choose a model that accepts cabinet door panels.  I can probably retrofit a door panel, but “probably” has me being reluctant to try.

The absolutely best dishwasher we've ever had was a Kitchenaid back when they were made in the USA. We used it for 10 years and then my wife wanted a newer model because it's a girlie thing. [smile]

It still worked well so I gave it to my neighbor and he installed it in his MIL house and it's still working 29 years later.

We replaced the Kitchenaid with an Asko...what a turd. That's one horrific product, within 2 years it was toast and it was still under warranty.

We then moved on to a Miele which I would highly recommend, it's quiet, it washes well and it's a nice piece of German equipment.

Unfortunately, after 9 years of constant use, the pump burned out and it was a $700 charge just for the parts...obviously it was time to let go.

We decided to purchase a Cove (manufactured by SubZero and Wolf) because it came with a 7 year all parts warranty. Am extremely happy with that decision, after 2 years I would purchase another one in a heart beat.

My neighbor has a stainless Bosch and it's extremely quiet although not as quiet as the Cove or the Miele.

I have to add, that we are extremely hard on dishwashers as we have 3 cats and 2 dogs and my wife insists that every meal that's served to the animals, is served in a clean dish. We're talking about 2 full loads of dishes a day, every day, 7 days a week.

I'd also echo the suggestion that you use the Miele detergent packs, they are the best available, we continue to use them in the Cove because they are the best. They DO NOT etch the glassware and clean the dishes superbly.

Etching is an issue and the Miele detergent packs prevent that. I've found that cutting the Miele detergent pack in half still provides the necessary cleansing capabilities...the Wolf tech guy told me that.

Doesn't cutting a detergent pack in half ruin the time-delay for the different cleansers/rinse agents embedded in them?
