Need Help: Name that wood!

Hi, this is a family heirloom that isn't in great shape.  My brother is a heavy smoker and I'm considering refinshing the piece.  Is anyone able to tell me what kind of wood it is?  In the chair photo, there are two markings.

French Walnut and 790-MAH (I'm thinking that MAH = Mahagony)?

Here's what one of the legs looks like when sanded with 80 grit.  2nd photo is with some water on it

And here's a picture of the entire table.  It's a card table with nicely painted (I think) suits.

French Walnut is probably the name of the stain, not the wood itself.
