Well thats the saw. My wife uses it to cut 2x4 1x's tree branches and other things for her art studio. I saw her using it and it scarred the hell out of me. she was moving her work piece around before the blade even stopped moving.

So I need to get something asap.

Requirements are:  it has to be light weight. It will be moved around alot

Every thing she cuts is usually small like in the bottom left of the photo with the clock. thats a 1/4" ply.

I don't think it needs to be a miter. Does any one know of any tools for artists able to handle these things or should I just pick up a new cms and if so which one?

Why not contact DeWalt (owner of Delta) get the repair parts for the saw blade cover which are probably pretty cheap if still available?  Then either get instruction in the proper use of a power miter saw or if you are sure you know the proper instruction, teach your wife.  I've heard of plenty of artists using these kinds of power tools without incident.

Great Idea.  I went to their website it says that the parts I need are discontinued and no longer available.  [sad]

The only saw I can find is this one on amazon.

I used to have a Ryobi  battery operated compound miter saw that worked very well in till I had my tools lifted while working in Chicago. I would like something like that again but I don't see them available any more. I would love to find a compound miter saw that took the 7 1/4" blades.

It's not battery powered, but you might look at the Makita LS0714.  It takes 7 1/2" blades so a 7 1/4" won't reduce your depth of cut much.

Since the safety parts are no longer available for your saw (call Monday just to make sure), scrap it unless you're sure of another saw's parts working perfectly on that.
You could also give it to someone with a HUGE DISCLAIMER to cover yourself.

Thanks Nick.  I was looking for that one from memory but only found the corded version so I thought it was discontinued.

The Makita LS 0714 is a great saw, but if you are cutting branches and such I think any SCMS or miter saw is a bit dangerous.  Smaller does not make it safer though , I have had serious kickback with my 0714 by being stupid.  Let's just say I was pleased and surprised all digits were intact and have respected it a lot more ever sense.

Maybe consider a powered hand saw like the Bosch model 1640VS, which has a miter box you can buy separately.

At least get her a good Silky saw for the branches and only use the miter saw for dimensional stock.
