Negative Rake Scrapers

For those who also turn, I’ve gotten hooked on negative rake scrapers. They are supposed to be good only for fine finishing cuts, but I’ve gotten good results for medium depth cuts as well as for fine cuts.

I just ordered my 5th scraper. Each has a different shape.

It’s really easy to reestablish the burr with a quick trip to the diamond wheel on the slow speed grinder.

I got into D Way scrapers, but I’m sure there are other good vendors.

I love mine - it's a Thompson. There is a turner "Robo Hippy" that frequents SMC forum and I'm pretty sure he even uses scrapers to hollow bowls.

What angle top/bottom do you grind to?

I made a set up gage out of a plastic credit card. I place it on the grinder tool rest and adjust the angle to where the wheel just kisses the curve cut into the credit card.

Works great. I have these credit card setup gages for all the tools I need to frequently grind.
