NEW 2200 Router Overheating?

I have the new imperial version. I purchased two of these so far. Both of them overheat badly new out-of-the-box, the collect/spindle becomes burning hot to the touch under no load conditions. Before i return the second router under the 30-day money back guarantee, i am asking the forum for confirmation of what is the normal behavior of this router under no load conditions. USA Festool would not clarify, they simply described that because the collect/spindle is connected to the motor, some heat from the motor will be transferred. I had a 3-1/4 HP Porter Cable in a router table and never had overheating issue under no load conditions. I have the Festool 1400 router and never have had overheating issue under no load conditions.

Following is description of the test used to produce the problem. I run the 2200 at high speed for 5 minutes with no load, no router bit installed. Router is connected directly to the power outlet, no extension cord. After 5 minutes the collect/spindle will be too hot to touch, and the silver metal parts near the collet/spindle will be hot to the touch. When i run the router for 15+ minutes the silver metal parts near the collet/spindle will also become too hot to touch. When i say too hot to touch, one will experience pain if they continue to touch the hot metal parts for more than a brief time. When i run the same test with the 1400 router, the collect/spindle will be barely warm to the touch. What i remember about the 3-1/4 HP Porter Cabe, it also was just warm to the touch when running under no load conditions. Other 2-1/4 HP routers i have used in the past, from Porter Cable to Triton, all have only been warm to the touch, not burning hot.

For those who have 2200 routers, does your router become hot under no load conditions, where the collet/spimndle gets too hot to touch? Thank you for the time and assistance.

Welcome to the FOG!  Sorry it is under these conditions.  I don't have a 2200 but what you are describing does not sound correct.  Exchange the unit.  If you purchased from a local dealer test their demo unit for a comparison.

My 2200 runs with no significant heat - in either the motor and the collet - with most routing operations.

I've never seen it 'too hot to touch.'  Slightly warm perhaps, but I don't recall it being anything unusual.

This is the second router with this issue?  You might want to call Festool and see if they want to have it shipped back to them for diagnosis.

I would think they would honor the 30-day warranty and may even want the dealer to send it back for diagnosis if you choose to return or exchange it locally.

No heat whatsoever,  even after use. Slightly warm,  but I swap bits all the time and they are not overly hot.

Thanks to all for describing the normal behavior of the 2200 router. It is weird to have issue two routers in a row from Festool. In case anyone is interested, below are the serial numbers for the two routers.

Looks like to be from one batch, either a defective part (I would suspect bearings that have higher than usual friction) snuck in or an error was made in assembly (leading to the same).

Do you by chance have an infrared thermometer with which you could put a number to

(preferably with a reading before running under no load and giving the time it ran before the subsequent 'hot' measurement was taken)?

What is the manufacture date on those two?  The date should be on the sticker with the serial number.

Both routers were manufactured July 2017. This is the new 2200 EB-F-Plus Imperial version.

The problem may be solved. It appears the 2200 router requires a "breaking in" period of around 1-2 hours of use. Today i tested the second router some more. I ran the router, then again, and then again. Each time the router became cooler. Now the router only becomes warm under no load condition, what one would expect as normal.

I will update this posting if i have issue, but it appears that the 2200 router needs to be used for a while to overcome whatever friction/overheating issue exists when new. The above mentioned tight bearings might be a possible reason for the initial overheating. Another possibility are the motor brushes. When new they are not shaped and polished like worn brushes, this might cause substantial friction until they wear a bit. During the first tests, i noticed some fine black dust collected around the air exhaust vents, which may be from the motor brushes. Now that the router is running normal, i do not see the dust anymore. As i write this post i vaguely remember that my 1400 router may have had similar overheating issue when new, although not as extreme. It subsided after a few hours of use.
