New 8mm Shank Bits from Woodpeckers

Hey Richard, you might want to give McMAster another chance. I haven't seen a separate handling charge on my orders. Last order was in November this year and just merch, sales tax and shipping. Nothing extra. Shippimg has gone up but it has gone up across the board.

Same thing with you [member=44099]Cheese[/member], Zoro generally has a $5 flat rate fee for shipping and then free shipping over $50 if you are logged in.

My favorite side-benefit of the 8mm experiment is the boss bought an Origin, handed it to me and told me to figure out how to use it and what bits we can sell for it.  [big grin]

Obviously I don't know everything about what you do every day at WP but from my point of view, you have one of the sweetest jobs on the planet.  [big grin]

I could talk about fences and greener grass and all that, but I won't. It's a pretty sweet gig. [big grin]

Thanks for making these. I have always wanted the 16mm pocketing bit, but the Shaper One was out of my price and 8mm is also great.

I wasn't overly impressed with the shipping options. The lowest one, in my case(because I added some other items) was the basic UPS which said 5 days. This has to be some generic thing? There is no way in the world that it takes 5 days to go less than 125 miles. It could be done on horseback faster than that. Ohio is not that big, once it ships, likely here the next day.

Christmas time backlog?

Asked Santa for the 12mm, using with Origin helix mode it should work great for 1/2" bores. I did buy the Shaper 16mm when it came out, given the cost of the dang thing I'm reluctant to use it often. Somehow a >$100 router bit doesn't feel like a consumable to me.

Ya I'm with Richard on this one...I was looking for some strictly industrial stuff today and Amazon said it would ship AFTER CHRISTMAS...well that was a wake-up call.  [big grin]  So gift giving this year will have to be done locally...that's ok. It's a good wake-up call for folks like me that just want to order an item and have it immediately sent. We've all been spoiled...

Some feedback I'm sure you're aware of, but I just received the 8mm shank 16mm three flute template bit and the "RACKBIT" holder that ships with it doesn't work!

Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

I'll pass that along. Must not have made it to the assembly department that the shank was neither 1/2" nor 1/4".

Jeff, congrats on the new tooling and the new tool! Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with but the 16mm bit is certainly the low hanging fruit so it should be very popular.

The 16mm bit is shipped for free.
If I buy both the 16 and the 12mm bits and have them shipped together will the shipping still be free?

Michael and anyone else following along on the Free Shipping issue on the Clearing Bits.

There's now a package price on the pair that has a slight discount AND free shipping.

Anyone that bought both at full pop should give Customer Service a call and get a credit.

Well, it showed up today, after plenty of confusion. As I mentioned before, I chose the cheapest option for shipping, which was UPS. I did that specifically because WoodPeckers is in the same state as me, so regardless of how long it takes them to process the order, shipping time is generally the next day.
I placed my order on the 13th, which was a Wednesday (evening, so call it Thursday) From then, first thing Thursday Morning (14th), it took until Monday the 18th for it to ship? I get the first E-mail that day, saying it was initiated and I would receive updates from FedEx. (why?, it was supposed to be UPS)
In reality, I don't care who the carrier is, as long as it shows up. The first E-mail from FedEx says it will be delivered on the 19th. Then on the 19th, I get another E-mail saying it had been delayed, and would be delivered on the 20th. That one happened.
As gharel said, the included bit holder does not fit the 8mm shank. I'm thankful that WoodPeckers is on this enough to even go the extra mile, supplying 8mm shank bits. I don't really expect them to go to the expense of new holders too. I would probably suggest not even sending one that doesn't work, but some people might want it anyway?
After all that, the bit itself looks great, 3 flute and super sharp.

Now I am sad... I have bought quite a few WP bits lately and my collection of 'Rackbits' is growing.  Was wondering if they had come up with one to hold the 8mm.  Dang it, no such luck.

I received my 2 each 16 mm x 8 mm bits today and they are sweet. However, as already mentioned, 8 mm bit holders would be a bonus round.  [big grin]

And now for a brief personal history  [smile], way back when, it was CMT orange and Bosch blue straight cutting, brazed, carbide edge bits that ruled the world. They were the best at the time...however, time has moved on and now the solid carbide, helical edge items are the router bits of choice...hands down because of their slicing action.

This technology change its similar to the transition between HSS circular saw blades and the release of carbide tipped circular saw blades. Can you even purchase a HSS circular blade now? I know I have a new one from Milwaukee from about 20 years ago but I'm saving it as a museum piece.  [smile]  I'm planning on sending it to [member=69167]RMW[/member] for inclusion in his estate sale and I'm sure it will be sitting next to his 40 year old fly tying paraphernalia. [smile]

Yeah, a little disconnect between manufacturing and packaging. The "RackBits go in every package" rule was followed to the letter. The first wave of orders got a "bonus" they can't use with the bit delivered...but...it probably will work with others in your shop.

8mms are going to have to show a little giddy-up before we do RackBit II.

Somebody stick one of those in an Origin and shift the direction of this conversation.  [big grin]

Is it safe to assume those of us with Dewalt Routers can use one of the more reputable websites (TSO - maybe others - try to stay away from chinesium on amazon) that they are safe and correct sizing - I really don't want another router, but don't mind a new collet.

Not a fan of reducers in general, although I know the current Dewalt routers essentially ships with a 1/2" to 1/4" reducer (mine are all older than that change)

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] better yet, slide on over to the Jersey shore next spring and we can swap some heirlooms. I have a ton of HSS lathe and mill tooling and neither a lathe nor mill anywhere to be seen.

[member=81066]Hipplewm[/member] Elare has a full line of collets for Dewalt and other routers:

Pretty sure my 12mm WP bit is lurking under the tree along with a couple cats. Monday seems a long way off.

I ordered a pair of bits on the 15th and they were delivered yesterday.
Great looking bits and a couple of funny looking red plastic things.
