New Deck renovation

We had a flat roof and decided to put trusses on to change to pitch of the roof. Well, one thing lead to the next and when all was said and done, we had included the deck with the reno. Here are some pics of the deck I built. (The beautiful porch was built by our contractors when the roof was done. I can't take any credit for that)

Looks awesome!  I like the pitched roof over the mansard design much more.  Thank you for sharing.  Bill

Looks good

1.  What kind of wood is being used on the stair rails?
2.  Is that glass or plexiglass on the deck rails?
3.  Did you run into any code issues on the glass/plexiglass rails ?

Hi, I used cedar for the rails. I bought it at HD or Lowes and just looked for some pieces with a nice grain. The panels are 3/8" tempered glass. They were stamped for the inspector to confirm the right type of glass. I had a few issues with the building inspector until I had an engineer approve my installation. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'm happy to pass along anything I learnt during this build. Thanks for the kind comments.

Really, really nice work.  I never would have thought about using glass like that but think it's fantastic.  Awesome for the view..

sounds like your ready for some Schaeffers New Zealand Deck Sealant

done forget to follow part 2. its very important, Schaeffers New Zealand Deck Hardner is an excellent product

A really nice change.  I can't imagine a flat roof in Canada.

Did you replace furnace with electric heat; or are you being optimistic about global warming?

There are some, mostly industrial buildings obviously but some architects are designing and building flat roofs (5-7 degree slop) for residential buildings as well.

I used to have a sno plow customer who had a flat roof on his house.  We had to shovel the roof every time it snowed, so I bought a small snow blower to do the job.  We got it onto the roof before the first sno in winter, coverd with a tarp and just left it there until spring.  After one season the people moved away without telling us.  i went to get the sno blower and they had taken it with them.  [mad]
