Hey gang. I'm looking to raise a bit of cash so my Domino is up on the auction block. It's NIB and still in the original packing material from Festool.

Please check it out at eBay

Me, no, I'm not in the market for a Domino.  I would never buy anything on ebay without seeing the actual item, whether it's $5 or closer to $1000 as is a Domino.  Just trying to help, do as you see fit.  Good luck.

I think he may mean take it out of the box.

Last year a guy got his package, opened it and guess what, a 7lb brick!

The tracking showed so by the time he got the package the seller was long gone and never found.

Personally, I would hesitate to take a chance on buying a used (even "new") Festool. It's worth the peace of mind to me to pay full price from a dealer. After all, Festools maintain so much of their value used that you don't really save that much money anyway.

I've got close to 600 Ebay auctions under my belt, about 50/50 as buyer and seller.

For the most part, the folks who get screwed on Ebay are the ones who don't use Paypal. Many seem to fear connecting their banking info into the deal.

In the case of the brick in the box, if the buyer used Paypal and the seller wasn't established, the $$ doesn't get released to the seller until the buyer says he's satisfied. Seller doesn't see one spec of the buyers financial info.

The reason the seller has to disclose banking info is so he can't disappear, and he can't sign up if he's phony. In they're unverified (haven't established that they are who they say they are, financially), they don't get the chance to run off with your money. If they do, Paypal reimburses you.

The system works very well if you'll trust it.

Jim,

I trusted PayPal and had US$2,000 removed from my account by somebody in the USA and sent to Vietnam !!!
PayPal refunded the money but would not explain how this could occur. Six months later they wrote to me and said that someone had illegally accessed my PayPal account again !!
That was it for me. I closed the account.
As for eBay, I had about 600 transactions up with only one problem, and that individual was caught by the cops and paid restitution.
If you carefully check seller feedback, you will generally not have a problem on eBay, but PayPal is an unsafe medium.

The last time I considered signing up to PayPal I actually read the fine print and was shocked to learn of my liability to them, that I would be indemnifying them and they would not be protecting me.  I exchanged several emails with their lawyers and never got a satisfactory explanation in answer, so I never joined PayPal or eBay as a result.  Maybe they have revised their policies or otherwise improved since then (about 2 years ago).

I think ebay actually purchased pay-pal a year or two ago and has worked hard to clear up the problems and holes that pay-pal had in their system in the past.
I think that people can get caught up by their own desire to get a deal that is too good to be true.  This is how a lot of the crooks work people by going after the greed we can all have to get something for nothing or next to nothing.  I guess at this point I feel as safe with Pay-pal as I do in handing my debit card to someone I don't know in a store or giving it to a vendor over the phone.  But of course who would want to steal my identity anyway....  If you are not comfortable with the system then I have no issue with people choosing to go other routes with their purchases.

Best,
Todd

I wish the USA credit/debit card companies would implement a system like the French have used for a long time.  For example, if you go to a restaurant in Paris, when it comes time to pay, the waiter brings a portable machine to your table and presents you your bill.  You hand the waiter your card which the waiter enters into the machine as the waiter stands beside your table.  The transaction is processed, and the machine is handed to you to verify the amount and to enter your PIN number.  Then your card and receipt are handed to you.  The restaurant has nothing to use to rip you off.  All of the critical information is transmitted electronically (encrypted) to the card issuer.  The card has both a smart chip embedded and a hologram, so its rather hard to fraudulently duplicate.
