There are two new kids on the (sander)block.
ETSC 2-125 & 150 which are powered by regular 18V batteries.
And has a circular LED light around the sanding disc.
Can be used with a bag or dust extractor.

As handy as a cordless sander can be, I don't get Festool marketing sometimes. They dropped probably the best belt sander on the market when they killed the BS105, the absolutely incredible HL850 planer was killed long ago, the niche but amazingly useful and popular LS130 linear sander also got dropped. As did the RAS.

But they bring out cordless sanders that still need a dust extractor hooked up to run otherwise they clog up in no time. So unless I'm mistaken, the only people who will benefit from this as a cordless device are those that have the cordless dust extractor that goes flat in record time as it's been said here many times? Which also makes me think just how big is that market, compared to the market for the above tools that were killed?

Or have I got this all wrong? Wouldn't be the first time anyway.

I don't get it. I did not realize that cordless sanders were that much of a want or need. Festool must be selling an awful lot of them to come out with this one. Sure hope they don't discontinue the corded ETS EC 150/5 or any more of the corded dust extractors.
Personally I've been holding out hope that they would come out with a cordless palm router. I know that the other manufactures sell a lot of them.

In Holland many painters switched to the DTSC 400 because it's cordless. And battery operating time is acceptable.
Inside the house they connect it to a dust extractor.
Outside they work with the dust bag and sometimes a face mask. Because they mainly work on ladders or scaffolding.
But in my experience the dust collection with the bag sucks. Especially with the sander upside down.

And cordless dust extractors also suck because of their short operating time.
When sanding a whole day you need a lot of batteries.

The overall shape of the sander makes me wonder whether its internals are based on the ETS (as the name suggests) or the ETS EC (which the handle suggests).

If it's an evolution of the ETS/ETSC, then it should have an internal blower that allows the use of a dust bag.  If it's a cordless ETS EC, it would be mostly neutered without extraction.

It comes with a baggie.  At least according to the manual.  And 3.5mm stroke in case no one asked :P  Luckily, does have hard/soft/med pads too so it's the middle ground between the two systems.

Oh awesome. Looks a chunk taller than the ETS EC so hopefully it has an exhaust fan for use with a bag. .

The dust bag seems over-sized but maybe that's just a good indication of battery run-time...that'd be nice.

So Festool got the message people don't like tool-specific batteries?

I’m glad to see it takes the standard battery. The ring light looks like an incredibly useful feature, especially for site work where lighting can be unpredictable. It looks like a really well designed tool.

HL850 planer is not discontinued

i kind of agree with the cordless option there's a lot of on site work that just needs a quicky

their marketing tho... is that man seriously sanding roof rafters ??????

Finally... big grin.  The screen shots are from Festool marketing.

However I will say, I own and use all 3 versions (ETSC, DTSC & RTSC) with the ERGO 1 battery and find them very enjoyable to use inspite of the weird battery platform. It's really more of an inconvenience thing for me.

I will be imminently curious to see what the balance is like on these, and if an edge guide attachment is coming any time soon or if they need to sell through the rest of the ETSC1 before they pull the trigger on that.

If the sanders balancing while having the battery attached is any indication, it seems they may be balanced fairly well.

luvmytools is in Australia, I believe, and it has been discontinued down here.

Yes I probably should have mentioned I'm in OZ. They've been off the market a very long time. Don't understand why though. Especially if any are still current products in other countries?

Not real. Not. Just not. I’ve never seen this in 38 years on the tools as a pro. Ludicrous.

I gotta say that this seems better than Makita's new offering. Makita's corded cordless is cool but kinda odd. I also think that Festool is probably feeling a bit of pressure to expand their 18v lineup because Makita/Milwaukee/DeWalt battery tools are sprouting up like rabbits.

[member=75933]luvmytoolz[/member] I have to challenge a little your assertion that the ETS EC sanders will clog. When I first started using the 150/5, I used it outdoors without extractor (or a bag) and it still performed very well (I didn't know better back then).

Does this mean I now have to wait for a new corded version with a light to come out too?

I guess it depends on what you're sanding and how much, I do occasionally do a very quick bit of touchup sanding on timber edges or faces without the extractor, but it does fill up with dust pretty quickly, especially when using the finer grit's which produce more of a powder that sticks, especially as they have no internal fan as per the Festool blurb below:

"The RO 150, RO 125, RO 90, and ETS EC have no fans so it is essential to use them in conjunction with a dust extractor"
