I have installed a new feature on the forum which will allow you to tag members in your posts. Simply type an at symbol (@) and then start typing the members' forum name. You will see a list of names appear that you can choose from.

This will underline their name with a link to their user profile in the post.

It will also (optionally) send an email notification to the member.

Lastly, a list of recent mentions from the past month will appear under your Profile > Mentions.

http://festoolownersgroup.com/profile/?area=mentions

You can also control whether you receive emails when mentioned, which can be turned on or off in the Mentions page with a checkbox. By default, I have enabled it for everyeone.

I spotted that the other day I had a bleep on tapatalk saying I'd been tagged in a post.

Can I mention myself? [member=38144]sae[/member]

edit: Nope, no notification.

Yeah, no notification when you mention yourself. If you mention yourself and need a notification of it, you might want to see a shrink.  [blink]

Cool feature, [member=101]Shane Holland[/member] - much easier than sending a PM if something in a post deserves a member's attention!  And it works from Quick Reply at the bottom of the thread too!

Thanks for continuing to make FOG one of the easiest forums on the web!

Reminded me of a caption that came up on Facebook the other day

@Shane Holland,

The mentions feature is not working for me, I use Chrome. Anything I should tweak?

It is a way to perhaps let a member know that his post is appreciated or you have a further question.  With the sheer number of posts here and also the fact that some members don't check in every day it notifies them that there is interest in something that they posted.  Members can opt out in their profile of being notified what the mention function is used, but it is enacted by default.

For instance, I have opted out of the email function because I am very active and accessible here I believe.  I check the forum several times a day and go thru all the posts usually. But if I didn't and someone asked me a question in a post I might miss it.  That is the beauty of it.  It would send me a notification.

I'm pretty sure you can't use punctuation right after the "mention" of the persons name.

When I type in, for example,  "@sha"..., I do not see a list of members names. Even when I type the entire @Shane Holland it does not become a link.

Most probably operator error, however I am puzzled.

Richard,

I just switched to Chrome on my Mac and it is working for me.  Whenever I see a question about something not working on a browser for a member but it is working on mine I will suggest that they clear their history and cache as a first step.  So I would suggest - even if that is wrong - that you try that first.

Let us know the outcome.

I use Chrome on Windows and it works for me as well. It does use Javascript, so if you've disabled it that would be the issue.

The talking to yourself business really only becomes a problem when you start losing arguments [tongue]
