New Festoolie - CT22 manufacture date question

Hi all, I have been drueling over the Festools for a while and finally bit the bullet last night.

I bought the CT22 and ETS150/3 sander combo at the Loveland Woodcraft store (which is about to celebrate its one year anniversary). When I got the tools home, I noticed that my CT22 says M.-Nr.12846/2005. I want to make sure that I have the latest and greatest product, should I be concerned that my brand new vac seems to be 2 years old?

I also noticed what looked like very fine sawdust in a few places on the sander, is that normal on a brand new tool?

Thanks for your assistance, I want to feel good about this expensive purchase and I have a pit in my stomach right now.

Hi Randy,

It sounds like the sander may have been used as a store demo if it has sawdust on it.  That certainly would not hurt the tool in any way.  The vacs have not changed that I know of so build date should not matter.  But, if you are concerned take them back under the no questions asked 30 day money back guarantee and ask for a new sander and current date vac.  Neither condition described would concern me.  Enjoy!

Randy,
Congratulations on acquiring your new Festool tools!

If there is sawdust on the sander, it means it has been used before.  Most likely, as Jerry said, it was just used as a demo tool.  I've purchased a couple of demo tools from my local Woodcraft store (not Festool).  Most of the time, the Woodcraft stores use the tools in a woodworking class, then they sell the tools after relatively light use.  But the store manager has always been up front with me about the fact that I am getting a demo.

Just to make sure, you should take a close look at the sander to determine if any other wear is shown on it.  If you want, take photos of the sander and post them here to get some opinions.

In the interests of honesty, the store should have informed you that you were buying a demo, even if there is absolutely nothing wrong with the tool.  It should always be up to the buyer whether to accept a demo tool or not.

Please keep up posted on what you find out.

Again, welcome to the forum.

The newer vacs have HEPA filters where they didn't 2-3 years ago.  Only diff. I know of...

Hi,

..... to check for the HEPA filters--  the HEPAs are white , the regulars are yellow.  If you paid the full current retail price then it better have HEPAs.

Seth

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

Jerry - you were one of the main inspirations to take the festool plunge after reading your amazing manuals.

Matthew - see below, I am not sure it was a demo, I closely examined the tool, and could not find any signs of wear.

Chris and semenza - The box did have a sticker on it saying "Supplied with HEPA main filters".

The dust didn't really look like it was from sanding, it was confined to small random patches that looked like drips, and it was very fine.

After all the supportive comments I decided to go for it Friday night, which leads me to my next post:
"ETS 150/3 problems - burning smell and overheating".

I thought it best to create a new topic, as this no longer relates to the original question re: manufacture date.

Thanks for your input and I hope you can help with the sander.

Randy,
Well, still, finding sawdust on the sander is strange.  Every tool I've ever bought from Festool is pristine in the Systainer.  I'm not sure, but I don't believe Festool does any testing in their factory that would result in sawdust appearing on the tool.

    Hi,

Based on your sander experience I would not be taking any chances. Open the vac and check the filter color.
