Hi, just joined the forum and thought I'd post a quick introduction. I'm a mech engineer and new homeowner. I've been a renter for all of my adult life and am excited to finally have an outlet (and space) for hands-on projects. I have experience with machine tools and automotive stuff but not a lot of woodworking experience. My initial interest is in building shelving and storage around the house.

My challenge is to design a tool system that can compress into a 18"W X 60"L X 90"H section of a basement closet for storage. My "workshop" will be the flat roof of my Boston triple-decker condo, which is four flights up from the basement. It looks like a Festool MFT/3 + TS55 could cover a lot of bases and substitute for a table saw and miter saw, while being portable enough to carry up and down stairs. I like that I could add a router and jigsaw in the future that would be compatible with the track system. I'm also considering the Kreg ACS which would cover similar sawing needs at a lower price point, and seems to be well received. However the more limited tool ecosystem and incompatibility with systems from other brands reduces its utility.

This forum has been a great source of information for my tool research so far, and I'm looking forward to spending more time here!

Welcome and congratulations on your new home and upcoming journey into wood butchering.

Welcome! And congrats on your new home!

Yes, if you plan to set up shop as needed and want to be mobile/ store everything with a very small footprint Festool is an excellent choice!

I work a lot around the house, set up shop in the back yard more often than I work in my basement workshop - Festool has proven to be exactly what I need/want. Excellent quality, excellent mobility - throughout the whole system.

Make sure to post some pictures when setting up shop & working on that flat roof top with some great views, I'd love to see that!

Kind regards,
Oliver

Welcome!

That looks like a good site for working in good weather but hauling the MFT up 4 flights of stairs is going to get old by the time you get to the 3rd floor.

If you can’t store it upstairs can you place a plastic shed on the deck that the MFT can fit in?

If I had to tote a table 4 floors I’d make it a Dewalt Express Folding Workbench. It would be easier to carry two of these than one MFT.

Bit overcast today but here's the view!

That is awesome, thank you so much for sharing! It will make a perfect outdoor shop.

On another thought, what Michael wrote is true. Maybe you can make a small shed for the MFT your first project. :)

Kind regards,
Oliver

I'll admit that I just looked at the weight and decided that it was physically possible, but had sort discounted the actual hassle as a problem for my "future self". I do have some extra space up there for a small storage solution, I'll think about that as a project idea!  Thanks everyone.

welcome escapegoat to the FOG and congrats to your own four walls plus Flat Roof!

"Where there's a will, there's a way"
has been demonstrated in the tiniest of spaces.

Please post the problems you encounter along with the solutions and successes as well as "lessons learned  [sad]". It'll help other city dwelling woodworkers.

I would not be surprised to see some posts from Europe where space is notoriously in short supply.
