New MIDI and CT Cyclone compatibility questions

I have the new MIDI. Looking into the CT Cyclone and asked Tool Nirvana about compatibility.

Their reply - "The CT Cyclone is designed for dust extractors larger than the CT MIDI with the primary reason being that it'd make the smaller vacuums such as the CT MIDI top-heavy."

Any problems with the new MIDI and Cyclone working together?  Will the cyclone work as sold, hose connection and all?  Top heavy?

Go for it.

Works well with the new mini/midi. The supplied hose will fit.
Top heavy? Well if you fill the bin with heavy dust it’ll be top heavy. The mini/midi is narrower than the CT 26 and ^ - Nothing really to take notice of until you start rolling it around. Just like it would have been with systainers with tools in them on top too.

If you leave out the see through plastic bin and just use the top an bottom together you’ll have a low profile compact unit. It still take many litres, you’ll only have to empty it more often.

I use Dusty deputy on my MiDI. Does anyone know if CT Cyclone is more effective?  I'm willing to change if it is :)

I use one on a Midi, I've never thought it was top heavy. Sounds like someone was trying to sell you a new extractor!

The CT Cyclone is more convenient but your Dust Deputy will be more effective.

Ah good to know :) I guess I'll stick with DD then.

Cyclone works fine on the midi or mini, hose connects on the bigger fixed wheel side so helps with the stability…..my ct26 w/DD works noticeably better than the cyclone

I have the CTL MIDI and the cyclone. Works fine. I used to have the CTL-SYS, that does not work with the cyclone. I suspect because the motor electronics work differently. I upgraded to a CTL MIDI. I also have a dust deputy. I use the dust deputy with the stationary shop setup (with CNC), it filters slightly better. The Festool cyclone is much more compact and transportable and I use that one when on site. Apart from being way more transportable, it also looks more professional. The MIDI with Cyclone is a neat little tower. The suction power stays high. I think you should always use a cyclone, except when the space in your van or truck is too tight :-).

I have the dust deputy too great piece of kit !

The other CT's will become more top heavy too, but their wheels stand out wider than the Mini's or Midi's so less easy to tip over.

But is the 50mm hose supplied with the CT VA long enough to connect the CT VA to the Midi??? And even if so; it's route will not be as straight as on the CT 26.

I just bought my fourth Festool vac. It replaces my older Bosch GAS 50 M. When replacing it i used the new to clean out the old. I noticed that the DD does not like to be overwhelmed with dust. it only caught 40% of the dust. I filled up the bag. So the DD filters slightly better than the Festool Cyclone, but when separating large amounts in high density, Planex comes to mind, the Festool is actually better. As I use the DD only in my shop connected to my CNC, I am fine with it. I bought the Festool because it is much more compact, looks more professional and everything fits and clamps together. The DD was way, way cheaper, but in hindsight I would buy 2 festool cyclones. The one thing stopping me from doing that now is that the DD solution has 55 mm hoses connected throughout and the airflow is really high now. The Festool CTM-MIDI I really outperforms the GAS 50M. Both are M class because they will let me know if the airflow dips below a threshold. The Bosch GAS 50M will now go to ebay.

IMO that is actually the other side of the main CT-VA down side - lower air volume.

The up side is a higher speed in the cyclone hence a better separation at very low air flows and/or high dust ratios.

As for cost ... I am surprised no one is talking about getting the CT-VA cyclone unit itself as a spare part and making own assembly for shop use. The same way folks used the DD cyclone unit for years and many still do. The cyclone part itself is like 1/4 the retail of the whole unit. (Which I have.)

Yep, i second this. I have both, i feel the DD is a better separator, but when working on a project in the house, it really sucks not being able to stack stuff on top of the Dust Extractor, enough so that i bought the CT Cyclone

Euh because those looking at cost don't start by looking at Festool to begin with?

Also; the bonus of the CT-VA is how nice it fits in the System with it's Systainer format. That's hard to replicate DIY.
