Hi -

As promised in the Rack Systainer thread I started this AM, here are the details on the drilling kit we introduced at WIA. While in stock in our main warehouse and retail stores, these are not yet shown on the website (but will be shortly) - so if you really have to have one sent in the next 24 hours, you'll have to order by phone. I'll update this thread with the page link when I get it.

Cheers -

Rob

Veritas® Drilling Kit Introductory Special

This in an excellent kit for on-site installation work. It contains a useful assortment of drill bits, countersinks, stop collars and plug cutters in a variety of sizes. It is supplied in a custom black-and-yellow T-Loc® mini Systainer® with two French-fitted trays made of firm closed-cell EVA foam. Each tray has a contrasting inner layer to let you see at a glance if anything is missing.

The kit includes:
• 5 Imperial HSS Brad-Point Bits: 1/8”, 3/16”, 1/4”, 5/16” and 3/8”
• 5 Metric HSS Brad-Point Bits: 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10mm
• 5 Tapered HSS Bits and 5 matching Countersinks: for screw sizes  #6, 8, 10, 12 and 14
• 2 Stop Collars: 3/8" for #6 and 8 bits & 1/2" for #10, 12 and 14 bits
• 2 Veritas® Tapered Snug-Plug® Cutters: 3/8” and ½”
• 2 Hinged Nylon Storage Boxes (for your own stuff!)

The brad-point drills have polished flutes for superior chip clearance and sharply defined lips to score the hole perimeter for clean entry and smooth sidewalls. Made from high-speed steel, they are not subject to burning and stay sharp longer than carbon steel bits. A selection of common metric sizes is included for use on 32mm system cabinetry, and with metric fasteners.

The tapered HSS bits match the shapes of wood screws so that screw threads grip for their entire length. Used in combination with the hardened countersink/counterbore cutters and the stop collars, they let you set the bit for flush countersinking to a full 1/2" of counterbore.

Our patented Snug-Plug® cutters make smooth sided, slightly tapered plugs. The first 1/8" of the plug is the stated size, the rest flares out at a 3° included angle to ensure a perfect fit. Sizes included will plug the counterbores made by the tapered bit sets.

Two hinged nylon boxes, measuring 3-1/4”x 1-7/32”x7/16”, provide storage space for small items like fasteners or driver bits.
Drills, countersinks, cutters and boxes are made in USA, Canada and France; Systainer® case made in Germany.

The full price of the components if ordered individually is $234.55. Our introductory price on the kit is $149.00; our regular kit price will be $179.00.  An excellent value in a useful kit.

This is a very appealing kit indeed, especially at the introductory price.

I do have a question. After just now looking at some GRK and Spax screws, it appears to me that the screw bodies are much more straight than the old style screws which the tapered drill bits were originally designed for. It seems to me that the tapered drill bits are not really needed any more if one uses more modern design screws. Am I missing something here?

I'm down for this kit... is there an option to exchange the metric bits for imperial?

Hi -

Yes - tapered holes are not strictly necessary for GRK and other low-root screws.... the tapered drills have most benefit for turned screws in hardwood. No matter which screw style you use though, the tapered bits come to a finer point, and are easier to start than parallel bits of the same size....

Hi -

Well... the quick answer is no, as they're packaged and sitting on the shelf. I'm sure that our service folk could accommodate reasonable requests though, as long as they were close to the current component costs....

I would be interested in knowing what you'd swap in/out though....

Our thinking was:

Top tray - countersinks and plug cutters match so they're fully compatible whichever measurment system you use, and the tapered drills are fine too. The two storage containers let you add your own bits and drivers to the kit.

Bottom tray - we chose the most likely combination of hardware/predrill sizes for metric and imperial uses, without overlapping existing Festool solutions. The premise was to have the range that would be most used for site work, or on-site problem solving....

This looks like a kit I could use Rob.  I will place it on my Christmas wish list.  My list, as usual, consists mostly of items at Lee Valley.

Rob,

OK, I have placed orders for various goodies you have announced recently, Parf dogs, Rack boxes and drill kits. Unfortunately, to get to some of these bits I had to see the deal on the laser level. Curses.

BTW, for US customers, why does the address info ask for the state? The zip code gives that information. In fact, I noticed that the final address confirmation included the 4 digit Zip code extension that I had not even entered.

Hi Jeff -

Price will be good for at least three weeks, as this is the only place we've shown it. We have yet to run the actual promotion!

So - I'll say until at least Nov 15th.

Cheers,

Rob

Hey Rob,

This may sound strange, but thank you for thinking about us.  I realize that you have a friendly focused group here but to debut a product here so that our group can get a head start is pretty wonderful in my book!

All the best!

Got my kit today, looks great. I can't wait to put it to use! [big grin]

Thanks Rob!

Same here!  Came very quickly... Thanks!

One sort of stupid question, is there anyway to connect a Sys Mini to a regular Sys?  I couldn't see a way but thought I had seen a pic of one stacked and locked with a T-Loc.  (First time having a Mini Sys)

cheers

No there is not...

Maybe you are thinking of connecting a reg sys with a maxi, that can be done.

Got mine today and tested one of the drill bits... finally, a drill bit that does not blow out the other side of the hole. I think I will have a good relationship with this kit.

Perhaps I missunderstand, but in reading the description of the kit contents, the following is included...

The kit includes:
•5 Imperial HSS brad-point bits: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16" & 3/8"
•5 metric HSS brad-point bits: 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm & 10mm
•5 tapered HSS bits and 5 matching countersinks for screw sizes #6, #8, #10, #12 and #14
•2 Veritas® Tapered Snug-Plug® Cutters: 3/8"and 1/2"
•2 stop collars: 3/8" for #6 & #8 bits and 1/2" for #10, #12 & #14 bits
2 hinged nylon storage boxes (for your own stuff!)

When you asked about swapping metric for imperial, what did you mean?  It seems that imperial bits are included.  Then again, I may have missunderstood your question.

Thanks.
