Newbie questions: Getting to grits with a RO 90 DX

First post on this forum. I'm a sanding-newbie and recent Festool convert, with recent purchases:
  • HKC 55 EB-Plus Li Circular Saw + rails
  • RO 90 DX FEQ Sander
  • OS 400 EQ Vecturo Multitool
  • C 15 LI FL Screwdriver / Drill
  • CTL SYS Vacuum

I've always hated sanding in the past, and hence avoided it, but a few months ago I bought myself a Mirka hand sanding block with some Abranet, attached it to a vacuum and was blown away by how easy sanding has become. After a false start (thinking I needed a Mirka electric sander and Abranet discs) I then bought the RO 90 DX.

I'm now setting myself up to use it and need a range of abrasives.

Usage:
In the medium term, I know I'll be sanding some exterior metal railings (which are beginning to rust) for repainting; a wooden stool (to remove old light varnish) for oiling; and some painted interior doors for light surface repainting.

Currently have:
  • Discs: Mirka Abranet 120 / 360 and Mirka Abralon 600 / 1000 / 2000 / 4000, all of which I have cut to shape for 90mm disc;
  • Deltas: Mirka Abralon 600 / 1000 / 2000 / 4000, which I have cut to shape for 93mm delta;
I'm disappointed that I cannot get a selection of grits in small quantities. Packs of 50/100 are way over the top for me, as my use will be hobby / very very occasional. While I could take a 20-year view (where relative cost is not so important), I really don't like overbuying/waste.

Questions:
1. I think I need a range of 90mm discs -- probably Granat, from what I've read here (and using the very nice abrasives search:http://www.festoolusa.com/abrasives ). Can anyone suggest how I might source these in small quantities? That is, around 4 different grit sizes, but just 10-15 of each? (My purchasing is Europe-based; mainly Axminster UK and Amazon UK/IT/DE. )

2. To get a range of 93mm deltas, I'm currently looking at these Mirka Abranetshttp://www.axminster.co.uk/mirka-abranet-delta-abrasive-sheets-pkt-10-ax872748 which sell in packs of 10 (I'd also get a backing pad to avoid any velcro depletion on the Festool end). Does anyone have any better suggestions?

3. Which disc grit sizes would you suggest for the jobs I've mentioned above?  (Metal railings / Wooden stool / Interior doors and surrounds)?

4. Do I need Vlies for the metal railings, or will general purpose Granat manage it?

The abrasives search, while great, tells me what I **could** buy, as opposed to what I **would be advised** to buy.

Any help gratefully received!

Bob Marino, bobmarinosbesttools.com  sells 10 packs of both delta and round discs.  Go to the sanders, select rotex, select RO 90, select sander accessories, select the type paper...granat is most useful.  Most grits will have the option of ten packs.  Bob's one of the best!

Are US dealers allowed to ship to Rome?

hi electricfeet,
I recently bought a RO90 and went through the same dilemma. In the end I bought the big boxes of round Granat in 120/180/240/320 (and I think I have 80 too), plus delta in (I think) 180/240/320.
If you don't find another solution, it might be mutually beneficial to share some of these; assuming we could find an acceptable way to do the exchange.
First see what other replies you get; then PM me if you want to investigate ?
I live in the Netherlands so it would have to be a postal transaction; I'm new here so without a lengthy reputation you may also have an issue of trust to consider....

Hi!

My suggestion is grab the phone and ask local Festool-Dealers if they sell by the sheet. At least one of my dealers always has a box per style & grit open to sell by the sheet - and also to give some freebies when someone buys a new sander.

I don't think that shipping from the US to Italy will make a lot of sense, speaking of shipping cost and import duties/fees.

The offer from Billy Bunter is mighty nice, shipping from the Netherlands to Italy will be more reasonable and without import duties/fees.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Thanks for this, but as Holmz points out, shipping to Rome is problematic from outside the EU. It's a nightmare from the US -- they keep the goods in customs for weeks(!) on end and the duty is often more than the cost of the goods.

Thanks Billy Bunter, that's a nice offer. I'll try six-point socket II's suggestion to call dealers here first.

well done ! Now why didn't i think of asking someone on FOG first ?! At least i have supplies for the next couple of decades...... ;)
