OBSOLETE - How do I keep the FOG from rotating pictures

On my laptop this picture displays with the proper orientation.  When I uploaded it to my post the picture was rotated 90 degrees.  [sad]

I am trying an experience.  All I did was download your image and save it again on my Mac.  I suspect that it has something to do with the forum software.

Ya Peter, this has been a problem for the last couple of months. I've replied to posts on my MacBook Pro, but when I add photos with my iPad or iPhone the photos become turned either 90 degrees CW or 90 degrees CCW. It's a rather willy-nilly state of events.

I've given [member=57769]TylerC[/member] a heads-up on numerous occasions so this situation can be addressed. I've just chalked it up to a difficult to diagnose issue which I understand, however it makes effective communications more difficult, and sometimes impossible.

Digital cameras, especially those on phones, store orientation data in EXIF. I had modified the forum software to determine the orientation and auto-correct/rotate images as necessary. Your computer is doing this for you and that's why it looks right there. I think when the forum software was updated, this modification that I wrote was lost.

One way to "fix" your image is to re-save the image on your computer/notebook where it has been auto-rotated based on the orientation of your camera when you took the photo. When you re-save it, the new orientation will be saved as well. Then when you upload it, it will be in the correct orientation.

Alternatively, hold your phone the right way when you take the photo. I say this, but I always hold my iPhone "upside down" from what the "correct" orientation is. For instance, the "correct" way to hold your iPhone is with the volume buttons up. I'm right handed, so I hold it with the volume buttons down since the red button to take the photo is on the right in that position.

A good way to use the iPhone camera in right orientation with your right hand is to use a volume button as the shutter button.  Either will work, just don't accidentally press the sleep/wake button on the bottom right when you do it.

I posted this on my MB Pro, then took the photos with my iPhone. The photos are oriented correctly on my iPhone. I then opened the thread on my phone and added the photos.  Both of the thumbs have been turned 90 degrees CCW, yet when expanded to full size they are returned to the correct position.

However, looking at the same thread on the MB Pro, the thumbs have again been turned 90 degrees CCW, yet when expanded to full size, they remain turned 90 degrees CCW.  [eek]

They are the same orientation in the thumbnail and full size for me.

I guess there's just some goofy image stuff going on here.  [unsure]

Thanks all.  I'm running win10 on my laptop. 

In the future I'll try re-saving the picture on my laptop, even if it is showing the picture in the correct orientation, before uploading it to see if that fixes the problem.

Shame Shane's custom code was lost in an update.

Same here. Just look at my profile picture. Rotated 90 CCW. When I modify the picture in my computer 90 degrees, it puts it up the same way as I rotated it. Cant win for losing. Oh well. What can I do?

The most common cause is the size of the image in both pixel dimensions and data size. Try making them significantly smaller.

I know this is an older thread but I would like to find an easy way to get pictures from my iPhone to post correctly. I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on for the last year but if they don’t post right it’s just too aggravating. This isn’t the only forum that this happens on and it’s driving me nuts. I’ve probably made things even more difficult by taking pictures with all different sides of the phone in different directions so now I have no idea what’s what. Please help I’m failing interwebs 101

This is fairly common with IPhone / cellphone pics. As far as the direction you held the phone goes , you will probably need to sort that out yourself. But one of the common causes for the rotation is that the pics are too big. For what ever reason that causes the forum software to do what it wants with them.

So for both being able to rotate the pics to proper orientation and to resize them you will probably need an app or program to manipulate them. I believe there are some photo resize apps that are easy to use.  Pretty sure other forum members can help with this.

For Windows machines there used to be the Image Resizer PowerToy, but MS in their wisdom took that away years ago. Not to worry, others have filled the gap. There is an app called Image Resizer that looks and works like the old MS Powertoy did.

If you search you'll find a number of them, but the one I'm talking about and have experience with is the one that Brice Lambson wrote.

I've been using it for years on Win7Pro, Win8.1RT and Win10Pro machines with no issues. Easy right-click resizing of one or more images. Overwrite original or create a copy.

There are litterally hundreds of image resizing apps for any platform imaginable. Not hard to find in the app store. Resize your images to 1024 width or smaller, and you should be fine.

I’ve noticed this also. Uploading from iPhone or iPad.
Remedy has been to go back in the picture library, rotate the images in the editor and save. (if phone shows right way, save in a wrong direction, and then rotate and save the right way a second time) - iPhone/iPad won’t save again in the direction it recognised the image when you opened it. I believe there’s a bug in the iOS, because this is not only happening on this forum.
iPhone is sometimes slow to recognise the plane you’re holding it - notice and let the controls on the screen rotate before you take the picture. This is very noticeable when first holding the phone upright (portrait) and then moving it forward towards near flat (water level) and shifting from there to landscape. Sometimes the phone doesn’t recognise the fact that it is in landscape orientation.

Realize the world of forums doesn't run on the Apple Iphone etc. No other platform, be it Windows or Android has the same issues and makes you jump through hoops with picture posting that Apple has, not what you want to hear but its reality.

One method I employ is to send the photo to myself. I can receive it on an iPhone, iPad or MB Pro. The native resolution of an iPhone 11 photo is 4032 x 3024. I believe that's been the resolution of all iPhone photos back to at least the iPhone 6. Unfortunately that's way too large for this website to deal with. To be clear, I have posted some 4032 x 3024 photos on the FOG but it was really, really painful.

So I'll take the picture and then email it to myself, at which point you'll be queried whether you want the photo to be sent:
Actual size (4032 x 3024)
Large size (2016 x 1512)
Medium size (640 x 480)
Small size (320 x 240)

I'll always choose the large size (2016 x 1512) because it retains enough definition to be able to enlarge the photo and examine the details. The medium size also works OK however it starts to pixelate as soon as you blow the photo up. The small size is useless unless you have a fondness for looking at postage stamps.

Not only is your statement not helpful, it's also not accurate. It has nothing to do with iPhone directly (other than that the iPhone reads and applies the EXIF tags) and has everything to do with EXIF itself. If you look back up in the thread you'll see that Shane Holland, who IIRC used to run this forum, said the very same thing over three years ago.

[member=71948]StevoWevo[/member]  - What you probably want to do is strip the EXIF data from the image before you upload it, unfortunately I don't have a specific app to recommend, but I'm sure there are at least a few out there. That will keep any application from rotating it. I wish Apple included this functionality in the built-in editor, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I suspect that the reason that the people see different rotations on thumbnails is that the forum software is, in effect, stripping the EXIF data when it saves the smaller thumbnail version.

In Windows you shouldn't need any third party app, just right-click on the image and choose:

Properties -->> Details -->> Remove Properties and Personal Information and use that to remove all or some of the EXIF data from the file.
