OBSOLETE - How do I keep the FOG from rotating pictures

"Not only is your statement not helpful, it's also not accurate. It has nothing to do with iPhone directly (other than that the iPhone reads and applies the EXIF tags) and has everything to do with EXIF itself. "

This is a hilarious statement, if it has nothing to do Iphone directly why, is it they are the only ones having issues. You Apple people really make a lot us laugh. This has been a constant problem for years. My helpful statement here is become the Shepard not the flock. If you like posting pictures easily, simply get a phone that takes and processes them properly and save alot money in the process. Or get the right apps strip out this and that do a test posting etc, etc, etc!

I use Microsoft Paint.  One click to rotate a photo.  Then you save it to a new file name.  You can also readily re-size a large photo to something smaller.  If you are running Windows, its probably already on your computer.  If not, I am pretty sure its a free download from Microsoft.

Here’s an iPhone image straight from the phone.

It’s rotated

Here it is again

[attachimg=1]

Oh look it’s oriented correctly  [eek] [eek]

All done on the phone

Open the photo app, select the photo, touch edit at the top of the screen

Touch the straighten icon at the screen bottom then the rotate icon at the top to rotate the image

Touch done. Then repeat the above process this time rotating to the correct look. Click done.

You have to go through this double process because the phone won’t let you save the image if you haven’t modified it.

Then again from your phone go through the attachment process in the forum. Pick the photo you modified the phone asks for size choose one these are large.

Done

Ron

Thanks for that Bob...it was an interesting article. A couple of take-aways:

"This problem can occur in practically any software, from a program on your PC to a website or a mobile app.
For example, on Windows 7, Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Explorer ignore the Exif Orientation tag. Windows 8 added support for the Exif Orientation tag, which continued into Windows 10. Images may appear correct on a Windows 10 or 8 PC, but rotated differently on a Windows 7 PC."

"The average website or desktop application should also obey Exif Orientation, although not all of them do. If a photo appears sideways when uploaded to a website, that website needs to be fixed–but you can probably rotate that image on that website anyway."

It’s impressive that you quoted the part of my statement that answered the question which you went on to ask. Also, I find your statement, “You Apple people really make a lot us laugh.”, insulting and borderline abusive and feel there’s no place for it in this forum.

Here's an example of the 3 different photo sizes that I talked about earlier.

Large 2016 x 1512

Medium 640 x 480

[attachimg=2]

Small 320 x 240

I don't recommend uploading pictures to the FOG.  They've lost pictures over the years and no one seems to know why.  Many great threads here are missing the pictures and this is the reason why.  Also, I personally hate thumbnails and never click them.
Best way to post pictures is to link to a free cloud source like Flickr.  I take pictures using my phone and have the Flickr app auto upload them and keep them stored there.  Then I go to my laptop or desktop and  post threads with pictures there.  Solves all the problems people talk about.  I think there is a tutorial sticky on how do do this but I could be wrong.

There was a particular incident that caused the loss of a lot of pics years ago. It has not been an ongoing or regular problem.

  I get that an outside hosting service can protect pics from being lost on a forum, but then again those services can have issues as well. Or decide to nix everyone's pictures. Which one was it that recently that killed pic access to many, many forums?

On a personal note I hate having to click and go to another link, page, etc while trying to read about the pictures being shown. Then switch between picture and the text.

I agree, this is annoying. This seem to be the case in some other forums as well. As one (if I get it right) is using this forum the picture and text is vital to fully view a post.
I now tend to include full size photos, as when reading post here it is so much more smooth, as pictures adds the “thousand words” to the story.

Am I right that when using a thumbnail the server must find the full size picture in “another” directory? As opposed to a full size image witch is saved as “one” along with the text.
I suspect that, reading old posts, where thumbnails are clickable, but the image disappears because the full size image can’t be found. The opposite is with in-line full images.

I think the same can be said of images that reside someplace other than the forum.

I've encountered posts as I am sure others have on this and other forums with links to images in the posters' cloud account.

It's all good until that person closes the account for whatever reason, or cleans out all those old photos forgetting that they are linked to a thread here or somewhere else. Then you're left with nothing but a 'not found' error message of some sort.

So either way can be a blessing or a curse.
