OBSOLETE - Trouble with notifications

This is something that the FOG admin would need to do.

In addition to the SPF record, Admin should also add PTR reverse lookup record. Mail providers are becoming more strict and if they can't verify the source server validity the email is rejected by your host before it even gets to your spam folder.

thx for this info...
I have now changed my email address to hotmail, lets see if it was a gmail problem, so far, no dice...
all my threads show, unnotify, which means notify is ON for all the ones I get no email, still nothing in spam...if this does not work, it must be something on FOG end, I hope.... notifications are such a useful feature, hate to surrender it...

TomK is a genius!!
changed my email address from gmail to hotmail, and whamo, got my first notification in 5 years!  Superb... who would have thought, sheeeesh...
If anyone has gmail and has this problem, just make a new email address for forums...
hope it keeps working
thx Tom!

I also use Gmail and haven't seen a notification since July 16, 2022.

I thought about changing my email address, but feared I might end up locked out of my account and in any event it's just an inconvenient workaround.  This is really something that should be fixed on the FOG side.

Seth and I are not able to make any changes.  Those need to be done by the Festool IT people.

Perhaps they will check out the posts above and try to rectify.  And let Seth or I know that actions have been taken.

Kudos to Tom,
changed from gmail address too hotmail, and notifications are flooding in...
who would have known... so many quirks...
it was a PITA changing the email address, as it locks u out, then let me back in with an email...
First notification in about 5+ years!

OK, the agony has not ended...
while it took me 5+ years to figure out the notification issue (can't have an gmail address), there is new problems.

I have spent a week trying to get the newly delivered notification emails out of my Gmail Spam bucket.  Gmail is my email server, despite having a hotmail address.  However, after trying EVERY fix Google recommends, they have all failed.  I never have this problem with any email going to spam...it might happen, but is immediately corrected with a simple "not spam" button.

When all suggested attempts fail, Google advises the sender to WHITELIST my email address.  So if possible Peter, can you pls have your IT guy WHITELIST my email address?  Pls advise if you can do this, or if you do it, when its complete.  My guess is, this would solve a lot of problems with all users.

Even with tremendous persistence, these problems are incredibly difficult to resolve.  Hopefully I am almost there.  will update once something changes.

I am double posting this, as these two threads are nearly identical, they prob. should be combined into one, so others in the future can read one fluent thread on this issue....

WillB,  I have sent you a pm with something to consider trying on your end.

After several more hours of digging...
I think I found the problem, sadly no simple solution, other than using two different email servers.
Summary below
I use gmail server.  I was using my regular gmail address on FOG.  However, I could NOT receive notification emails with my gmail address for 5+ years.  So I changed my email address on FOG to my hotmail email address.  Finally FOG notifications come into my email, so that solved the FOG end of sending the notification emails.

But in gmail,  all those FOG emails end up in spam.  Tried every trick possible to get the FOG emails out of spam, no luck.  After even more Google searches, I found one thread with the answer.  Google filters do not work on email imported through other servers, only those on POP3, which I assume is the primary email server.  Seems like I am trapped, unless the FOG sending is encoding something in the notification emails that designates SPAM.  I receive hotmail emails into my gmail server every day, none have every went into spam....only FOG notifications.
Unless FOG can solve the gmail notification problem... not sure there is a simple solution, other than using the hotmail server, or reading FOG emails out of my Gmail SPAM folder.  I doubt I am the only one with this issue, so hoping this benefits other FOG members.  you can waste days googling this stuff.
of course, always open to any suggestions!

In my case, the notifications work for the first couple of days, after which it decides that my contributions are no longer necessary or desired.

In most cases a couple of days’ notifications is fine.  But sometimes an interesting thread sits dormant and I wish I had gotten the notification once it came out of hibernation.

My guess is they missed some setting during the setup of the software.

One thing I checked is the domain festoolownersgroup.com doesn't have DKIM, DMARC, and SPF keys. These keys help prevent email spoofing. Servers have been known to reject mail if the domain has been a part of a spoofing campaign. Adding these lets relay servers know that the email was indeed sent by the domain.

Is there a way to help the Festool IT team here?
It is getting pretty embarrasing and for no obvious reason .. I mean, forgetting SFP was a basic mistake back in 2010, not mention today.

I am sure there are more than enough folks on the forum who would be happy to assist. Possibly even guide someone over a webex/teams/zoom call to do the neccessary.

I know - from experience - that even bigger companies than Festool do not staff (IT) experts in each field as it is not feasible. Unless you have 50+ IT staff, you may not come across a concern like here. So it is no shame to ask for assistance from your /supporting/ customers to assist with things which are NOT your core business to begin.

Pinging via PM the folks who came with specific advice right in this tread - I am sure they will be happy to assist.

UPDATE... I think success....
I went back to Hotmail account, and the FOG notifications started falling into spam again there as well... so I dug to find how to prevent that from happening...and for now, that is fixed.

So NOW Google filters is working properly and I got my first notifications today!!!

Will it last?  Dunno, but I sure hope so, as I have invested prob. 25hrs in this.  OCD can drive a person nutz.  Anyway, not holding out hope, as I have been a FOG member for 15+ years, and even when notifications worked in the early days, it only worked temporarily.  As another poster mentioned, I would get a few notifications from a thread, then it appeared as if the thread assumed I lost interest and never sent any additional posts.  Anyway, this is all bananas, tech stuff never seems to work, and often the solutions are just too time consuming to find.  But hopefully this might help a few other members.

[member=76259]MattFestool[/member] can you please help fix the forum notifications?  It sounds like the festoolownersgroup.com domain is missing its DKIM, DMARC, and SPF keys.

We see the issue and working to resolve.  It's vacation time for some staff here and in Germany so give us a week or two for a resolution.  I'll post back in this thread when the issue is fixed.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, appreciate it!

Matt
