OF 1010 vs OF 1400

Of course there are others that would suggest buying all of them as they each have their purpose.

Yes, I keep wanting to get my 1400 out to do some work...unfortunately I don't have one....yet.

I can see how that'd be a problem - I'm experiencing a similar issue with the CMS ...

Honestly, at this point, my hardest uses would probably be trying to make holes through 3/4 birch ply and putting decorative edges on 4/4 or 5/4 hardwoods. I have no idea where that falls on the scale of router-toughness.

The 1010 will do this all day, no problem.  I've bored a few hundred 20mm diameter holes for giant, home-made MFT tops, and it never whimpered.

For edge treatments on hardwoods, or dados and grooves in any material, I'll go in stages of 6mm (1/4") at a time, but I'm able to do that with bits that are 20mm (>3/4") in diameter.  Depending on how much that would bother you, I think you have your answer.  (It doesn't bother me--I wouldn't plough deeper in one pass no matter how much power I had, just because I'd feel like I was abusing the bits.  I do the same on my router table with the big router.)

Gotta hurry to sleep now before midnight, happy new year all!

Regards,

John

What about cutting large "windows" into 3/4 Birch ply? I would like to do rounded-corner cutouts in a fish tank stand I'm about to make so that things can be stored inside the stand. I visualize this in my head as cutting the round corners as 90* worth of circle using a router-circle-cutting-bar-thing and then doing the straight sides using the guide rail. Is the 1010 up to doing that?

I do not think that this would be a problem at all with the 1010...you can always buy one and try it out and see if it is up to the task and if not, return it under the 30 day policy.
