First post here  [big grin]
At the moment im using a Trend T5 router with the Trend hinge jig. Im looking at getting a new router to use to do kitchen worktop joints probably a Dewalt DW625. Instead of having the 2 routers could i buy the Festool OF 1400 instead to do both jobs? Is it small enough to use with the Trend hinge jig? and will it take 1/4 inch cutters?
I could then sell the T5 router and just carry one router around with me..

Thanks for any replies

Hi Neth

Welcome to the FOG!!

I don't own the 1400, but have the 1010 and the 2200 and use the 2200 for worktop stuff and the 1010 for light duty.

The 1400 from what I have seen on the FOG is the good in-between and should serve your purpose well and it does take  both 1/4 and 1/2 router cutters.

There are many, many reviews on this forum re the 1400 and if you use the search option above you will find enough to give you the best information available on the net.

I don't go in for bashing all other non Festool products, but having owned Trend and Dewalt routers, and now the two Festool machines, the comparison between them is Ford Escort to Ferrari.

Go and play with one at a dealers to see the difference.

Welcome to the slippery slope of Festool addiction.

i use the 1400 with said hinge jig and cut worktop with it and think it is fine for both jobs.

Cheers for the replies,
Dean do you need any extras to use it on the hinge jig? im guessing i will have to get the 17mm copying ring. Does the router come with a 1/4 collet for the trend cutters?
It looks like the Trend T5 will be going on Ebay  [big grin]
Cheers..

cant remeber on the collet as i lost the 2nd 1 supplied with the route so ha to buy a 1/4 collet. and to get a 17mm guide bush you need guide-bushing-adaptor-469625 and the us style guide bush at the bottom of this page http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/productlist/4/202/guide_bushes.html

The OF1400 doesn't come with a 1/4" collet. It comes with 3 collets, 1/2", 12mm, and 8mm. The 1/4" one is part no. 492141, and the list price on it is £39.36 inc VAT.

Personally I think it's a bit rubbish that it isn't included, especially when they include the 12mm collet which is never going to be used by anyone in the UK.

When I bought my OF1400, I asked my dealer to swap out the 12mm collet for the 1/4", which he did at no charge.

I've also used the 1400 for worktops and can confirm that it is up to the job.

Thanks for your help
Its starting to get a bit expensive now.. So  i will need a 1/4 inch collet, a 17mm copying ring 493315? a Trend GBUS160 guide bush? + a guide bush adaptor? Is this right?
Dean, i have tried to find the 469625 guide bush adaptor, in the searches it only comes up with usa sites and states it is for the 1010 router?  There is a 493566 adaptor for the OF 1400 but this only shows up on usa sites too.
Its all getting a bit confusing for a dam router  [big grin] [big grin]

Cheers

Hi

Cant you just use

Copying ring
KR-D 17,0/OF 1400

You can find it on the Accessories page of the OF1400 section of the Festool UK site.

How do you find the hinge jig, good ?

John

yeah i does only come up on us site, i must have got wrong code as it is the 1 for 1400. i just took product number to my dealer and he phoned festool and they send 1. they dont make a 16mm guide bush which is why i use that combo unless thats why you said 17mm and comansate for differance when setting up.

Cheers..
I will just go for the 17mm copying ring and try with that, if its a bit awkward i will get the parts you suggested Dean (thanks)

John, i find the hinge jig useful when im fitting a few doors in to new frames. If your fitting doors into old frames its useless..

ditto on how usefull it is, i had the 16mm guide bush combo because i also use the lock jig and have the guide bush uperty sizer

I have also looked in to the lock jig but i dont think i would use it enough. It might come in handy for the face plates but i would rather just drill out for the lock with my 3D bits and drill. It seems a bit of hassle just  for the face plates.
I was also thinking of getting the Trend router cutter for putting a leading edge on a door. that looks a useful bit of kit.  I suppose thats why i want just the one router that will do the lot..

Cheers....

regarding the lock jig i hardly use it but at the time i was working in 14 student houses putting 5 lever locks on 35mm doors alot of them knotty pine doors so came in very useful but now it dont get used unless there is a giant knot in the wat and then it makes life easy. i use the ts75 for a leading edge

I have the dewalt plunge saw, which i could use but i cant fit a 2.6m long rail in my van  [big grin] and i dont trust the 2 shorter rails fixed together..
p.s i have found a stockist of the guide bush adaptor in the Uk..

what van you got? can you not build a shallow box so it slide right under the passenger seat?

A citroen berlingo, the van has all my tool storage low down, and its too long to fit anywhere high up.
