of 2000 question,

hi all.
i decided i was going to buy a of 1400 [big grin] as i was sick of getting plastered in mdf dust [sad]. i decided the of1400 would be better than the 1010 as i have 1/2 inch bits for my dw625 thats in the table.

i went into my local dealer to see had he one. he didnt have it in a t loc and would have to order one. he then showed me a of2000 that he had there for a while. he is giving it to me for a lot less than the of 1400. he also lent it to me to try out for a few days to see will it suit me

this was manufactured in 2007 . do you think there would be any unresolved design glitches not yet fixed
how would you compare the dc on the two.
i did not find the dc( ct 22 on full with 36mm hose) great with the 30 mm guid bush that came with it when i was routing a piece of mdf with my worktop jig.
are  there guide bushes with dc holes in them to let the dust up through it.

has any one a pic of how the bits and bobs go back into the box ( i got a bit exited when taking them out.

which do you think i should get the of 1400 or the 0f 2000

Don't know much about the OF 2000 but I just did some cuts on MDF with my OF 1400, 30mm guide bushing, and a 3/4" straight flute bit. I used this with a CT Midi and it still shoots out quite a bit of dust. I don't have a whole lot of experience using DC with routers. I just deal with the clean-up throughout the work flow. I think the nature of the beast is such that generates dusts that is hard to manage.

As I think about it, I wonder if a spiral upcut bit would provide better DC as it would pull the chips/dust up towards the DC shroud on the router.

im in the process your are alan i would love a 2200 but is it worth the money and can i do every thing i need to with the 1400 ?

The design of the OF2000 is at least 11 years old because it was already sold under the Festo name and that name was changed to Festool in the year 2000. So if you have a 2007 model, you can be sure there are no unsolved design glitches in it. I haven't used it myself but from what I've heard and read it's a fine machine and not much different from the OF2200 so I think you could buy it just fine without getting remorse later.

There is no need to worry about glitches with a 2007 version of the of2000 router. It's heavier and stronger than the of1400. The 1400 on the other hand is more agile and has much better dust collection. The dust collection (and possible lack of an electronic brake and/or variable speed depending on what version of the of2000 your bought) is the weak part of the of2000. The dust collection is not too impressive and the dust hood can't take the 36mm hose (only 27) and the is also prone to breaking due to weak plastic and being poorly placed.

The strength of the of2000 is the excellent build quailty, immense power and ample bearings. It's also equpiied with the very best cable I have ever seen. It's extremely smooth and flexible - even in comparison with the plug it cable which is really good in my opinion.

i highly recommend the OF2000.

i have owned the OF2000E for 11 years and love it.
if the model you are looking at has the model no. OF2000E, then that model has the electronic brake.

i purchased the OF1400, used it slighlty, just enough to get to know its features, and then sold it on ebay, as i was not impressed with the OF1400 when compared to the OF2000.
it has heaps of grunt and will never let you down.

i find dust collection to be excellent.
i did not notice much difference between the 2 routers performing the same task, which i did test. (dust collection)

the big difference for dust collection would be going up to the OF2200.
it is a monster and the best designed router on the market.
dust collection does not get much better than this baby.
for full disclosure, i do not own an OF2200, but i have had the pleasure of using it in a colleague's workshop for 8 weeks on and off, and i am familiar with all its features.
if i had the choice and money, i would choose the OF2200 over the OF2000.
no question, the OF2200 is thee best router in the world.

thanks for the replies

the model i am looking at has leters after the of 2000.(not sure off the top of my head ) but it is variable speed.
i know what you mean about the plastic shroud for the dc. it looks a bit fragile and in the way for resting the router.
i too was thinking a spiral cutter would help the dc.
the 36mm non antistatic hose i have fits over the dc shroud perfect.

the problem i see with the dc on this type of cut is i cand use that sit catcher thing . the dust is blown awy before it is colected. the top of the dc shroud is too open to suck the air from where it is needed. also the guide bush is solid and restrics the dc air from catching the dust.
can you get a guide bush with air holes in it

I seem to have a preference for the bigger and heavier routers, I haven't seen a 2000 in the flesh but the 2200 is an absolute marvel to behold. I I had the cash I would have the bigger model without a doubt.

Yes, the rails go across the back of the systainer at an angle, its the only way they fit.

Barely fit is correct, not much extra space.

The OF2000 is another Mafell design, like the OF1010. It's been around a while, but it is a workhorse. Triple shaft bearings and dust collection better than other routers in it's class. vs the OF2200, it's a 2-for-1 deal. Get em' while you still can- they're built to last.
