OF1000 turret depth stop... how to use?

I'm kinda embarrassed to ask, but how and when would one use the different stops on the turret stop? I've got an older OF1000 and could never figure out when I'd use the different stops. I tend to use the one that gives me the "least" amount of plunge just so that the spindle is keep close to the motor housing to avoid deflection of the bit. Not that I'm really taxing the tool but its just my home spun OF1000 mythology.

Any applications where you'd use a longer or shorter stop? Stepped routing when doing a deep cut?

The turret is for routing deeper grooves in small increments.  At least that is how I use mine.

Yeah, like if I was making a 1" deep mortise with a 1/4" diameter solid-carbide spiral bit, I'd be concerned that the bit would burn, and might break if I tried to cut the full 1" right away. So I'd set the plunge so it would be a full inch using the shortest screw in the turret, then I'd start with the longest, go to the second longest, and finish with the shortest.  I usually keep them set about 1/4" different in height.  Hope this helps.

Regards,

John
