OF1400 dust hood widened for large bits

Ran into a problem when I wanted to use a wide router bit with the OF1400 dust hood.  So I bought a spare hood (Festool part# 492000), pried off the sliding door piece, and enlarged the hole using a spindle sander.

And how well did it work?  Was there much dust that escaped?

If not being used as plunge bit, wouldn't it have been possible to drop the chuck down and insert the bit from the bottom?

It works well enough (I use the chip deflector with it).  Re: plunging below unmodified hood, and then install bit... you could do that, but (a) you'd lose the plunge ability, (b) last minute depth adjustments would be more of a hassle, (c) I'd be worried I'd forget and untwist that handle... Yikes!

THAT .. would be my primary reason [eek]

The dust shroud can be put on after you have set the router up, when fully open the dust shroud will slide over the flats on the collet nut (the flat sides where the spanner goes on).

I have accidentally released the plunge lock with large bits in and the dust shroud on and the shroud has just popped of with no damage to anything. I am not recommending trying it but it is almost like it is designed to release itself if some idiot like me forgets that they have a large bit in.
