It's getting tiring that when you visit a vendor's site, they do the pop-up "hey! good day, and welcome! please give us your email address to sign up for our newsletter and you'll get $10 off your first $50+ order!" "oh, thanks for that email and the spam has already started, but we did forget to mention that for the discount, you also need to sign your cell number up for daily spam SMSs"
Yeah, I unsub with "reason: other" and tell them I'll give them my cell number if they'll give me their CEO's cell number so I can forward all the SMS spam I'll get for them to get a couple bucks. He can't block me either.
I hate this new trend.
Someone working at a vendor: any idea of the revenue stream from ruining your customer's cell life for a buck? I'll never give them my number except for when they won't use it for spam.
I feel like getting a Google Voice number to sign up for these things then set it to never bother me.

I've come across only one online vendor which asked for my cellphone # in addition to my email before a promised discount code would be given to me. Email addresses are fine as I have a couple dozen of email addresses to give away (and I can create more), but cellphone # -- which I have only one? Of course, no way.

Oh, wow, okay, you're lucky. Maybe it is a Canada thing? Maybe there's a law against it or the 'murican SMS advertisers don't do Canada... yet.

Ordered some abalone veneer today... "SMS for that discount!"; Walrus Oil... "thanks for the email but we forgot to mention we need your cell". Over Black Friday Quarter (yeah, beginning of October to, well, some are still on...) it was non-stop

An example from Lowe's (being renamed as Rona):

another way they get you>  you buy something at the big box store and they want to know if you want a paper receipt or if they could text it or send to your e_mail>  just give me the paper receipt AND NO I am not giving  you my e_mail ADDRESS or phone number.  LIKE I DONT ALREADY GET to many emails every day AND DON'T NEED YOU SELLING MY INFORMATION TO OTHERS.>

does not even escape catalog orders. IF You order something from BRIDGE CITY TOOLS at their premium prices and they thenask for a tip TO SHIP THE BOX!  this is already after their absorbent shipping fees>

Hmm, I'm an old fogie, but I know how to unsubscribe from emails and send "STOP" in text messages - and when those don't work I also know how to auto trash certain email senders in my email service and block calls & messages from certain numbers on my phone.

And heck, for stores in which I have an account and lost or threw away the receipt, it's nice they can look up the purchase and deal properly with a return.

But, I guess that's just me.

it seems every online site i go to wants me to sign up for their news letter. When they offer some sort of discount I always click the no thanks, they dont give something for nothing.

I usually unless Im very interested in what they are selling either their products or services i dont bite on the news letter which offers new items, discounts nd events etc.....
My old email was hacked from some company i did business with.

I got so much stuff tied to the old email that I keep it, delete the spam or send it to the junk folder and guess what, it keeps coming to my in box no matter how many times I call it junk.

i get so much spam on that email its incredible.

I created 2 new emails.  One for day to day stuff like the old one the other for important stuff business, etc.
I get none on it on either emails.

My old email makes up for it

I do a good line in "NO, YOU DON'T NEED IT" said very firmly, followed by "Just give me the paper reciept please" said rather more gently.

Seems to do the trick and quite honestly, they can shive the discount if I have to give my email addy to get it.

The convenience of everything being tied together causes this. All I have to do is leave something in my Amazon cart, or search it on my phone, and suddenly I get adds for the same thing on Youtube.

I missed the bit about a tip, but since my recent purchase from Bridgecity, I have seen more advertising from them than ever before.

Not sure if it'd help in your case, but I find clearing history and cache on my phone (which I do regularly to save space) helps keep such kind of ad from popping up. Another aid that comes to mind is to uninstall the app concerned.

How about every website asking for permission to send me notifications, I will NEVER click yes...  Not ever.

And also, no, I don't want to start a chat session just because I looked at your webpage.

Ooh, forgot about those, but how could I?!? Just the other day, I was on a page that non-stop reloaded the chat in the lower right corner so you'd be trying to read the page and this box would constantly shrink and expand. Not as bad but a site I frequent has this silly banner that scrolls side to side at the top of the page to tell you about free shipping. At least there I can scroll a bit to get it off the screen.

Too many companies and designers don't dog-food their products
