old/newbie introduction

Sanding in steps means increasingly shallower scratches...simple as that.

So last grit should give me a level  surface

What are you "sanding" ?

Those grits you mention are typical of what you'll use to get an ultra fine finish on a cars bodywork.

Until you get the Festool vac check out the Bosch VAC005 hose... Its got the end that attaches to Festool tools but it fits in most normal Shopvacs. I use it to connect my Domino to my Craftsman vac and it's way better than trying to rig something up. I got it on Amazon for about $30 I think.

Well, I rounded out my "octoberfestool" by picking up a recon CT midi.  So now I have saw, vac, and drill set coming.  Not a bad start.  They will be here at the end of the week.  Is... is it the end of the week yet?  No?  How about now?

Going to save up for an MFT, then some clamps and some dogs should get me well on my way.

Anthonyz- per the cord wrap on the back, a thing you made or an accessory?

Good tip on the hose blakjak - I found an adapter in the shop that works, kind of.  It doesn't like to stay in, and the shop vac is a screamer.

Eric, I went online to festool and got the one for the Ct 26. You can find pics and info I posted in another thread.

Hope that helps.

For the benefit of those who may read this thread in the future, at the Acme Tools Festool demo class today Steve Bace stressed that the Domino MUST be used with a dust extractor. While it is greatly beneficial to use a DE with the other tools, it is CRITICAL with the Domino as you must clear the chips from the Domino hole.

He stated that failure to use DE with the Domino could quickly damage the Domino or the bits. Don't do it!

I didn't know that before, the domino was just sitting completely unused gathering dust when I joined the shop.  No longer, it is my secret weapon!

Now that I have a CT midi on it's way, it will be used with extraction always.

I did however recieve my C15 drill set, and my 55req tracksaw.  I'm waiting for the extractor to test out the saw, but this drill is so much nicer than I was expecting - and I had high expectations!  Really happy I picked it up, I was on the fence as I already have a porter cable lithium drill driver thing.  Along with a big bucket of porter cable tools that all run on the same battery back.  Keep an eye out on my local craigslist for those!

Can't wait to get my vac now.  The list of stuff I will be ordering in the future is also growing at an alarming rate... glad I work at a shop where my boss is also talking about getting some new stuff.  He wants a domino XL for an upcoming job, I am going to try my best to get him to order it up with a DE combo, so we have a dedicated extractor for the joiners.

Good call!

I'm going to keep details about my upcoming purchase plans and some project pics in here, if this isn't the spot to do so, feel free to suggest a better place.  Also, dumb questions.  I had no idea about the importance of the DE to the domino, and I appreciate that feedback immensely.

So next up I need a build table.  However, doing what I do it makes sense to have a portable/rolling table, so I'm not sure if purchasing an MFT is the right way to go vs just buying some of the parts (rails, guides, top) and making my own.  That's what I am tossing around right now.

I really like this design here http://www.benchworks.be/mftc.html whoever made this is probably on these forums, to whoever that is - excellent design work!  Very nice.  My only issue is, I have a short bed toyota tacoma with a rolling tonneau cover on it.  The cover closes at ~18 inches in height, so I need to modify up the design with that restriction in mind.  I'm kicking around some design ideas to that end now, how to thin it out for transport.  Have the top detach completely, so it would really be a rolling sysport style cart that is designed to lay flat instead of upright, that the top would attach to separately.  The loose idea of it anyhow.

That way I don't need to purchase a whole mft, but rather just the rail system and top, so there's more money for dogs/clamps/guides for the drawer trays, etc.  I think, I haven't spoken to my sales rep about this yet as I don't want to bother him while he's busy with the recon sale.

That aside, I'm also trying to figure out what the next smart tool purchase would be.  I keep coming back to the idea of picking up a carvex.  Here's a good question - is there any huge difference between the battery vs corded version in terms of performance/power, I think it will run off of the 15 volt LI batteries my c15 came with.  And, if anyone could let me know what else those batteries are compatible with, just out of curiosity.

I appreciate all the help with everything guys.  I haven't even fired up my saw yet, waiting on the vac to get here first - but the drill is phenomenal.  Really great purchase.  I'm hooked!

Eric,  I got the plans for the http://www.benchworks.be/mftc.html. He has some great designs and I like the ideas, but like you I have a Tacoma and this is better suited for standing up in a truck. I ended up making one similar to http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-jigs-tool-enhancements/homemade-mft-done-wpics/, sans the vise. Smaller than the standard MFT and the table I got at Costco for $80. Just had to make a modified top. For straight cutting you can set up the guide rail track with parf dogs. For quick set up on site I almost like this better than the MFT set up. See Peter Parfitt's video on how to use them. They are $40 for 2 sets. I know one day I will actually buy a MFT table though.

Peter Parfitt Video:

Hey Anthony

I'm well acquainted with Peters channel, love his vids.  He's great.

I want something that will act like a systainer drawer rack system, but be able to roll on its back in my bed so I can close the rollup cover.  I just need to figure out how to set up a top/mft style system that will quick clamp onto it somehow.  Shouldn't be too hard to figure out, just not there quite yet.

Today was my first day using my new c15 in the shop.  Hole smokes it is so nice... again, I had high expectations - expectations shattered.  Brilliant!  (as Mr. Parfitt would say).

The only thing I could think of as a feature I would like would be a bubble level on top that is in line with the driveshaft. I might play around with that idea and stick something on there, just to keep me from driving crooked when I think I'm straight on.

Get my ct midi tomorrow.  Then I'll start testing out the tracksaw!
