Open Frame Wide Belt Sander Questions

I have been looking at the open frame wide belt sanders for some time now, (see links below), and am curious as to whether anyone here has experience with them. Aside from the stock width limitations (not too much of an issue for me), I am wondering whether they have problem with sanding uniformity across the panel. A few machines have platens (like the big boys), but I wonder whether that is necessary for these smaller machines. It would seem to be beneficial, but what is the sanding quality without the platen?

Any comments are most appreciated.

The only wide belts I have logged hours working with are the SCMI one's.

What is your budget?

I know the timesaver's are a really good unit too.

Jim,

You may want to PM the member "carrolladams". It's my understanding that Carroll has a sizable production shop in California. It's likely he would have some insight to offer.

My sander was made before platens on these units were standard. Not having the platen is the only regret I have. The platen doesn't change the sanding quality per se, but it keeps the sanding contact flat. Without the platen, you will roll the edges slightly. The difference isn't noticeable in most situations, but if you try to join two boards that have been sanded, there will be gaps at the outer edges.

Jim,
You may want to check on the Felder Owners Group (the other FOG) on Yahoo groups.  A number of the members there have the NorthState from Leneave Supply and seem to be quite satisfied.  I have no experience with them myself but would love to have one.  Good luck with your search.
