Opening Centrontec Wood Bit Set?

Santa delivered green this year instead of socks and underwear.  I got a Centrontec Wood Bit Set (Imperial) and is wondering how to get into the bit case.  There is a small nib that prevents the slider on the top from sliding over to open the latch.  I think I have to cut off the nib, but I wanted to double check first because sometimes with Festool the obvious way is not the best solution.

Richard, welcome to the forum.  Yes, as I recall, there was a small piece of plastic that had to be removed to open the case the first time.  I believe it's probably put there to prevent accidental opening during transit.

I concur, cut the nib. I too think it was designed to prevent accidental opening in transit. Transit can be quite varied in intensity...

Thanks Tom and Shane.  I was sure it was to prevent accidental opening but I wanted to make sure.  I did not want to do something that I would regret later.  Now those are really sharp bits...

Indeed, they are sharp.  I happen to know that they are sharp enough to nick your finger on if you're not careful.  [embarassed]

Perhaps this isn't the right place to post this question, but I too have picked up the new bits-impressive.  I'm still aware however, that we have not yet seen the Forstners, the square drive bits, or the Centrotec screwdriver handle made by Wiha on this side of the pond.  Any chance that these are in our future? Not to mention Centrotec 09 and square drive....

Forstners - Yes, expect them closer to mid-2010

Square Drive Bits - This has been discussed quite a bit.  I don't think we will see square drive bits.  Christian had replied to a previous thread about this topic.  It's my understanding that square drive is either not used at all or very little in Europe.  Pozi and Torx are the preferred recesses in that part of the world.

Screwdriver Handle - Not sure

Centrotec - I don't believe there are any immediate plans to offer a Centrotec set.  That's not to say that it may be a possibility later in 2010.

yes, I think in the Festool production facility, this is nib is known as the "Train Derailment Safety Catch"..... [big grin]
