Painting Hard Maple

Hi guys
First time asking a question here. I just built my first piece of furniture. My wife asked for a white desk. I looked on line and decided to get hard maple for the top. The rest is poplar. My questions are do you prime before you paint with lacquer an if so what do you use? it was my first time working with hard wood and its a shame to paint the hard maple top but my wife wants it painted so painted it is. I will be painting with my fuji mini mite 4

What lacquer do you plan on using, some manufactures have a "system" that gets applied in stages.

I know nothing about Valspar. I'll have to do some research and get back to you.

Now that SW owns Valspar I'll have my rep look into this.
