Pdc setting 4

Hi guys just bought a pdc drill today and if i put the speed setting to 4 the electronic clutch kicks in with very little resistance even on drill mode i can stop it with my hand if its set to 1,2 or3 i cannot stop it turning is this normal or is this a faulty machine thanks

From my experience, in gear '4' with the torque setting at its lowest '1', I can just stop my PDC chuck spinning (in other words I can cause the automatic clutch to stop the motor) if I hold the tightened clutch with a heavily gloved hand (like a leather gardening-type glove), but I doubt I'd be able to stop the chuck at any higher torque setting above '1'.

I admit I haven't tried stopping it it at a higher torque setting - and I wouldn't be in a hurry to try doing so - but hopefully this will give you an idea of how my drill (at least) performs.  Maybe others will chip in with other thoughts.

Perhaps you could tell us more about what you are/were doing with yours when your automatic clutch is triggered (drilling? or screw-driving for example?).

I think it's normal mine was kicking in the other day. I was drilling a 3" hole in a kitchen carcase with a hole saw. Set to 4 with the clutch OFF but it still keeps beeping and stopping. Annoying as on any other drill if you turn the clutch OFF it stays OFF.
 
Glad I'm not the only one, who's getting Beeped off with the beeping!

Really? I find I never use speed 4, it's just far too fast for most things. I certainly wouldn't even dream of using it or a 3" hole saw!

I use speed 3 for most drilling, but speed 2 for forstners and hole saws.

Yeah I'm gonna stop using 4. Its so fast I've managed to blue two of my small brad point centrotec bits lol.
 
I just naturally think of the circumference of the hole I'm drilling and there material I'm drilling into and pick a speed. It's not that complicated!

neither i was just tightening the chuck on a fastfix bit with gloves on i can easily engage the clutch on speed 4 even when in drill mode or high torque setting so i think the higher the speed the lower neuton meters of torque (nm)
 
I have rarely ever used speed 4. It's too fast for most things, and particularly good for overheating drill bits.

Speed 3 is pretty awesome. It's just a "get things done faster" mode compared to an average cordless drill's top speed.

Speed 2 is the best thing about these drills in my opinion. Having some serious power without slowing down to a measly 450rpm (I think PDC speed 2 is 850rpm) is very useful.

What do people use speed 4 for?

Same here it's not rocket science
 
I use speed 4 for drilling in metal and when using grinding stones or the like. Also its good for using the dandy paint brush and roller cleaner.

Infact I have used speed 4 a lot but probably could have and possibly used a slower speed.
 
I use speed 4 if I have to drill neat holes in a laminate or veneer for say shelf pins. I find the extra speed gives a nice clean edge.

Apart from that don't use it. I use 1 or 2 for hole saws augers and flat bits. 3 for anything else.

Yep. speed 4 is just the job for de-burring soft steel with one of those conical grinding stones.
 
I actually used speed 4 to spin the wera rapidadator bit holder plus other bits like a lathe. I then used files and grind stones on this 'lathe' to grind out centrotec notches and file edges of the hex shaft enabling the bits to work with the centrotec chuck. I posted about this in other threads.
 
The fourth gear setting shouldn't and doesn't offer much torque.
If my memory is correct, that speed and torque combination would be
appropriate for very small bits into steel.
