My wife wants a shelf under her kitchen window to hold potted plants.  Wondering what wood would be best to withstand harsh winters/snow/ice?  North facing wall so no sun to contend with.

I'd go with cypress but redwood or clear cedar would be fine if it's well supported. Or use pretty much anything you can get your hands on and hit it with a few coats of Smith's CPES, lightly sand, then a good quality spar varnish.

Jatoba, Cumaru, and Ipe all withstand the elements well and dont require any type of finish or maintenance.
