Pocket Screws with Dominos

I'm building a broadcast video set for a podcast. It may be necessary to move the piece, so it needs to be knock-down capable.

I'm thinking about joining pieces with a combination of glueless Dominos for stability and pocket screws for binding. Basically, it would be a normal Domino connection, but without glue. Then, once the two pieces were dry-fit, I would use standard pocket screw joinery.

I'm thinking it would be stronger than pocket screws alone, but still capable of being torn down without destroying the pieces.

But, I'm wondering whether glueless Dominos will actually bring any additional strength. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thanks.

Glue one side of the Domino, the side not being glued sand slightly.

They may not add much in strength, but they do aid in assembly and reassembly if you do have to move it.

Since Dominos fit tightly in the slots, they made add a little stability and, as already posted, aid in assembly, but the real strength will come from the pocket holes/screws. Strength wise, I doubt you'd need anything else than pocket holes/screws. However, if you are going to be taking this apart frequently, I suspect that, over time, the Dominos and screws will wear and the fit won't be quite as tight and strong as in the beginning. Depends how many times it is taken apart and put back together.

You'll get a few reliable knockdowns with pocket screws at best ... how many times are you going to shift it? If it's more than a couple I'd deffo look towards significantly different methods.

Couldn't you make solid modules and bolt them together?

^This^

I have a XL700, but just got a Lamello Zeta P2 and with the Clampex it seems exctly what the OP is suggesting with screws and dominos.
Just that doing it with a domino seems tortuous and showing off that a domino can be used, whereas the Clampex is optimal.

Hi,
What I'm going to suggest really makes a lot of sense if you are either going to do several projects which will be "knockdown" or you are like me and really just like to have the right tool for the job even if it's a little expensive.

Hettich, a major competitor to Blum, manufacturers of all types of high end cabinetry hardware. They provide a connection system called VB35/36 connectors http://web2.hettich.com/hbh/catalog/Start.do?localeId=en_CA&model=procat_ca&distributorId=90062

You'll want to have the drilling jig that they sell specifically for this system called the VB Drilljig. It's about $250.

These things are particularly amazing for closet organization systems etc.

Access to this stuff is only thru suppliers to the cabinet making industry so you'll have to find a Hettich distributor such as Robert Bury here in Canada.

I hope this helps for this or future projects you may do.
