Hi everyone!

I have researched around but couldn't find any valuable info on how a combo of Poly over shellac (de-waxed) performs.
I have tried it for one project of mine ( high performance Poly by GF over Zinnser's Bulls eye ), and it does gives a very nice finish, so my question is if anyone has ever done it before and how does this bond performs in time?
Anything helps!

Thanks in advance,
Yuri

I've put Polyacrylic over shellac many times with no issues.  Shellac is the universal undercoat.  Since Polyacrylic is crystal clear, a nice amber shellac adds warmth if that's what you're after.

I totally agree. I have put many types of coatings over shellac with no issues. I can't think of one that didn't work.

I just did some butcher block countertops with General Finishes High Performance Waterborne poly topcoat over a spit coat of Shellac.  The folks at General Finishes said using the High Performance over a light coat of Shellac was fine but avoid applying it over a built up Shellac finish.

Good point; mine was always a light seal coat of shellac usually as a barrier between water-based color and the water-based finish.

That's pretty much what I am doing. I have stained the wood, applied 2 coats of shellac seal , and 3 coats of poly over the latter.
I hope 2 coats can not be qualified as a over build up :)

BTW, did anyone experience problems with a Minwax Paste finishing wax? I have rubbed gently with a 2000 grit paper, applied some wax, and was rubbing for like 20-30 minutes and still can't make it shine. I bet people who can make it shine with a a hand rub can make Stallone feel jealous of their muscles ( maybe it is designed to be used with a polishing machine???)

Thanks again!

Wonder what the difference is between a light coat of shellac and a build up.  Seems like the chemistry should be the same...

Bullseye is the only sanding sealer I use. And I use it alot. I use it under stains sometimes, and over stains at other times, depending on formulations. I like to lay it on heavy to completely seal the grain, and then sand smooth to 180-220 so poly glides on it.  My favorite clear to put over it is Zar Ultramax satin, which is a waterborne oil modified urethane. I would avoid Minwax polycrylic because it is not so good.
