A shed roof would be the most traditional approach.  That being said, perhaps the image is distorting it, but the spacing of the dormer windows looks too wide and there is a visual void in the center.  Here where I live there would have been a third dormer in that space normally.

Peter by the looks of it that is above the entrance way and mist likely staircase hence the velux rooflight.

Where you at dan?. Nice countryside!

Thanks Peter, im in the uk and this is my attempt at recreating a new england type build, the design changed along the way, originally the main roof came down over the porch but thanks to a major balls up between the engineers and the architect we had to go with the design you see here.

Thanks Jimbo, yes indeed the staircase is there and inside we have a cathedral ceiling, the velux let in light to the entrance.

The bedrooms are either side with a bridge connecting the two sides of the house, heres a rear view.

Looks sweet love the new England style [emoji2]

Is that a garage /workshop in the back of the first picture?

That will be a nice place to spend time. Congratulations.

If it were me I'd stick with a pent roof. Cleaner lines.

Simon.

Gable to match the dormers. A gable also sheds all the water to the sides.

Great! seems the shed/pent/lean-to seems to be the favourite so far, i guess i second guessed myself today thinking the hip may look better.
Was nice weather today hard to believe with all the insane amount of rain we have had this year!

Damn now you have done it tom, i hadnt considered that!

From the picture it looks like you could tuck the gable under the soffit. Other choice is to land the bottom of the ridge about 6" above the top of the fascia. This will give you a small layover on the roof. I think that would look pretty good.

I would not have it hipped, its too shallow a pitch to look right just clad the ends like the main building and it will look great.

Dan,

I hope you didn't take my previous post as criticism in any way.  I have always loved Capes and their efficiencies and also their versatility.  Nor do I believe that every house should be built to look like everyone else's.

Only as an example, and not to dis-rail your thread, here is an image of my house which is a Cape [attachimg=1]built 1993) but built so that I could have a great deal of volume in the living room.  A purist would poo poo my design, but those who walk in are amazed that it feels bigger than it is and doesn't have a dark room even though it is nestled under century old trees.

That sounds like a good idea. That would look great!

I'll give my opinion but it may not be popular. I think you pigeon holed yourself with the two small dormers personally. I would continue the roof line down to cover your porch and above your door do a pitcher section to frame oh the doorway.

This is my house. Im not saying to do what I did exactly but that's the idea for the center section with he roof continuing straight down to the edge of your porch.

Peter,
Thats fine, it actually had never occured to me regarding the dormers, maybe in person it doesnt look so odd, this was my shot at creating a uk version if you like of the cape cod style that you guys would be far more familiar with than i.

I appreciate the comments regardless, posting pictures of a UK build trying to imitate US architecture is bound to draw some criticism good or bad, no offence taken.

I do see where you are coming from though and the original design had the roofline coming down to cover the porch, the architect messed up the scale with the engineers which forced me to create a dwarf wall on the first floor by 700mm thus raising the eaves considerably, ultimately if we are being critical the porch could be considered an afterthought in this state and i feel it should be joined to the main roof for the best result.

The house is being built on a shoestring really and i am doing everything myself, im a finish carpenter and kitchen installer and rarely get to do much framing.
