For the last year or so I've used Charles Neil's pre-stain blotch control for my jobs that have required staining.  While I've been relatively pleased with the results the amount of time spent prepping the pieces is substantial.  Since his product is water based you have to sand after the first coat and I typically do so after the second coat as well.  If I'm dealing with a large job this means I'm going through four steps in the finishing process before I apply any stain.  I've tried a 50/50 cut of shellac and dna in the past but that can really cut down on absorption and I don't end up with the color I'm after.  Based on a recommendation of a friend I bought some of SW clear stain base and applied that before I stained with their wiping stain.  It helped a little with blotching and uneveness but not much.  How much will spraying the stain affect the absorption?
Most of my stained work is in alder and with all three pre-stain methods I still little black lines after I stain. Conversely, the stuff that comes out of my friend's shop looks more like stained maple in the sense that after staining it is very clear grained, almost like they sprayed toner but you can see the grain.  What methods are you guys using?  I would ideally like to cut the 4 step process down to 1 or 2.
